Damien Broderick
Alert me when new Damien Broderick titles are added

What's this?

Bio: Damien Broderick is Australia's dean of science fiction, with a body of extraordinary work reaching back to the early 1960s. Like the late George Turner, he captures the distinctive flavor of his native country while reaching out to American and European readers. The White Abacus won two year's best awards. His stories and novels, like those of his younger peer Greg Egan, are drenched with bleeding-edge ideas. Distinctively, he blends ideas and poetry like nobody since Roger Zelazny, and a wild silly humor is always ready to bubble out, as in the comedy Striped Holes. His award-winning novel The Dreaming Dragons is featured in David Pringle's SF: The 100 Best Novels, and was chosen as year's best by Kingsley Amis. Revised and updated as The Dreaming, this new version appears for the first time at Fictionwise.com. In 1982, his early cyberpunk novel The Judas Mandala coined the term 'virtual reality', and is available here in an updated version. With David G. Hartwell, he edited Centaurus: The Best of Australian SF for Tor in 1999. Like one of his heroes, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, he is also a master of writing about radical new technologies, and The Spike and The Last Mortal Generation have been Australian popular-science best sellers--both books strongly recommended in Clarke's millennial revision of his famous Profiles of the Future. Schrdinger's Dog was chosen for Gardner Dozois's SF: Year's Best 14. The Game of Stars and Souls, a complete and free-standing portion of Broderick's mythic space opera The Sea's Furthest End, appears here in the USA for the first time.

3 The White Abacus [MultiFormat]
by Damien Broderick
Great science fiction runs on rich fuel. It is propelled by fantastic imagination, forceful style, and a secret ingredient: passion. by Damien Broderick
This nearly novel-length novella has never before been available in the USA. It tells a sweeping story of far-future interstellar conquests, alternating with scenes of a man being interrogated by aliens in a "hyperdream" state. Highly imaginative and unusual, a great example of Broderick's innovative style.

The future is going to be radically different, and very soon now. How different? Let Damien Broderick tell you. Human life and the human condition are changing rapidly as we enter the new century, and is about to change even faster and more radically. Dazzling scientific breakthroughs are changing how long we may live, where we live, how we dress, how we communicate, how we work and what work we do, and even how we think and imagine. Scientist Vernor Vinge proposed that humanity is approaching w... more info>> 2001

11 A Passage In Earth [MultiFormat]
by Damien Broderick
Roger Zelazny in the Foreword to Rooms of Paradise: 'A Passage in Earth', in addition to possessing an intriguing and engaging narrator, is one of those stories where things implied are as important as things stated, and the tone of the piece is such as to show that the author actually has a larger vision containing the events he has chosen to record here. To this extent, this story reminds me of some of the work of the late Cordwainer Smith, and I can only selfishly hope that he returns to this... more info>> 1978

15 Striped Holes [MultiFormat]
by Damien Broderick
A Comic Science Fiction Masterpiece! Science fiction that makes you grin, and then laugh out loud, is hard to find. With this very funny short novel, Damien Broderick joined the ranks of Robert Sheckley, Bob Shaw, John Sladek, Arthur Schopenhauer and Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Sopwith Hammil is a popular but rather stupid TV presenter when a time machine lands in his living room. To save his life and the human race (they're turning the Sun off!), he must find a wife inside... more info>> 1988 Ditmar Award Winner
