"Everest, I think." Ruth's husband looked at her for confirmation.
She nodded and reached for his hand; it felt cold and clammy. "That's right, Dr Kistna. We discussed it last night."
In fact it had been three o'clock this morning when Ruth had finally returned to her room at the hotel just two minutes walk from the Clinic. David had declined to cross the Sahara--since their disastrous Egyptian holiday he had loathed camels. Nor would he consider commanding a submarine bound for the Marianas Trench--"Nothing to see but damned fish," he'd growled. The prospect of being an astronaut on the new space station tempted him for a while, but in the end he rejected that too. Ruth had begun to think none of the options would suit her husband...
"An excellent choice, Mr Walker." Dr Kistna crossed to the VR console and began to type in commands with his well manicured fingers. Text scrolled up the screen.
"Even though I'm afraid of heights?" David laughed rather too loudly.
"Oh, I think you'll find heights don't bother Jim Stanbury." Dr Kistna looked up from his typing. The smile didn't quite reach his brown eyes.
"Jim Stanbury?"
"Your character. The expedition leader." He turned towards Ruth.
"You'll be Kerry Stanbury, Mrs Walker."
"Kerry." She tasted the name. It belonged to a much younger woman, a fit, outdoor type not an overweight housewife fast approaching seventy.
"And you have two children: Hayley and Russ."
Startled, Ruth glanced at David; he avoided her gaze.
"Right," said Dr Kistna briskly, relinquishing the keypad. "All set. Time to get Mr Walker into his suit..."
