What's this?

The man sat next to her and removed his glasses. Although he seemed to be taking some rest from shopping, he did not have any packages with him. Diana studied him out of curiosity and noted that he was about sixty years old, balding, but had a kind, familiar face that made you feel like you might have seen him before. He met her gaze and his eyes softened with concern. "Young lady, you look very sad about something. Would you like to talk about it?" Diana gave him a strained smile and shook her head. "I'd rather not." She half expected him to try to push her into talking about her problems; some old people were like that, liked to give advice. Instead, he smiled at her and said, "I am sad, too." Diana nearly groaned aloud. Oh no, she thought, here comes another sob story from a depressed old man. But to her surprise, he didn't say anything else. He took a book out of his coat pocket, put on his glasses, and started reading, just as she had been doing. Diana turned away and tried to concentrate on her own book. After a little while, she glanced over to find the old man gone. She hadn't even heard him get up. She twisted around and searched the area, but there was no sign of him. Her gaze dropped back to the spot where he had been sitting and she spotted something. Oh dear! The old man had left his bookmark on the bench--a fancy silver bookmark with a tassel tied to the end. It looked too special for someone just to toss it away. Surely, he would come back for it. She picked up the bookmark, intending to take it to the lost and found office, and noticed handwriting scrawled on it. Her eyes widened in surprise as she read the words. It was a note, presumably written by the old man himself, addressed to her! To the sad, but pretty girl sitting next to me, From a concerned old man who thinks she should smile again.
