The sword was mounted in the old Tachi style, ornate in gold fittings and black lacquer. It supposedly housed the spirit of a tengu, a bird-faced demon. Some people believed that. Even more said they believed it. Reiko was one of the few who knew the truth, and the knowledge made a chill run down her spine. For a moment she hesitated, racking her mind for another alternative. But in truth there was no other way, and so she unrolled the ancient scroll slowly and carefully, so as not to damage the brittle paper. The writing on it was archaic, the ink faint and difficult to make out in the dim light of the temple lamps. Slowly, piecing out the words one by one, she began to chant.
