Rafael Ambrose glanced down at his strong wrists and muscled forearms exposed by the too-short sleeves of the leather tunic of his warrior's costume, and wondered for the tenth time if his coming had been a mistake. Being compelled by company politics to attend one of Maplethorpe's social extravaganzas was a command performance he could do without. Especially tonight, he thought bitterly. The ancient curse he bore meant that tonight, the tenth full moon of the year, he had no control over his physical appearance. He adjusted his flesh colored mask as his gaze swept the room. The sights, sounds--and smells--of the guests dressed in their extravagant costumes excited his senses--almost overwhelmed them to the point where he had to fight to keep a tight rein on his emotions. He forced his breathing to slow. He must maintain control. He stood in the shadows of a recessed alcove at the back of the main ballroom. A pair of ornate French doors to his left opened onto an immense stone balcony that overlooked the city. From where he stood he could watch the guests as they made their entrance down the main staircase that flared into the ballroom and remain unnoticed in the shadows of the potted palms and the lush draperies that framed the balcony's entrance. And that suited him just fine. The less others noticed him tonight, the better.
