Sir Ernest Shackleton

Bio: Ernest Shackleton was born in 1874 at Kilkea, Co. Kildare, Ireland. He moved to England at the age of ten, and declining the career in medicine his father wanted for him, he went to sea at the age of 16, bound for a trip around Cape Horn. In 1901 he became part of Robert Scott's antarctic expedition aboard the Discovery. He married Emily Dorman in 1904, and by 1907 was again attempting to reach the South Pole, first in 1907 on the Nimrod, and in 1914 on the Endurance. The Endurancewas caught in pack ice and sank, forcing Shackleton and his crew to fight for their lives for the next 14 months. He attempted another expedition, aboard the Quest, but died of a heart attack in January 1922, not long after starting out.

The plan called for the Endurance, with Shackleton aboard, to establish a base on the shore... more info>>
