John J. Pullen
Bio: John Pullen was born in Amity,Maine and spent his
early years on the family farm.Amity is approximately
an hour ’s drive from the Patten Lumbermen ’s Museum,a
museum John called “the most wonderful museum in the
world probably because I spent my early youth in the sort
of life it portrays and am able to write this elaboration upon
its exhibits and know it tells a clear, coherent story of this
life.”
John was a graduate of Colby College of Waterville,
Maine and served in the Second World War in the Third
Army.He spent several years as the Creative Chief at
the Philadelphia firm of N.W.Ayr,a leading advertising
company of that era. But,John wanted to write. His first
book -the first Civil War regimental history -,The Twentieth
Maine:A Civil War Volunteer Regiment (1957)is still in print
and has become a classic. He went on to write and publish
five more books, the last one in 1999 -Joshua Chamberlain
:A Hero ’s Life and Legacy.
Men,Horses and Beans is one of a few unfinished pieces
of work that John never had time for until, unhappily,he
became bedridden in September of 2002.He was most
anxious to make sure the story of the Patten Lumbermen ’s
Museum was told for the preservation of its history
John spent the last five months of his life finalizing his
legacy and passed away on February 25,2003.
