1 Journals of the Plague Years [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
I wanted, most passionately, to write a novel about not only the future of an America under the cloud of the AIDS epidemic and what it would do to a generation living in a world where death and sex were intimately entwined. Not only that, but with a scientifically plausible means of bringing such a terrible era to a happy ending. This was in the 1980s, and my agent told me I was crazy, no publisher would touch such a thing because they couldn't distribute the novel in the Bible Belt. But I would... more info>> (Published: 1995)

Without a haven soon their spirits would die and the human race along with them. One group knew the unspeakable truth, the Pilots. 3 A Man of the Theater [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
I was asked to write a 700 word story for Nature's ongoing series. This is much harder to do than it sounds. Or as Oscar Wilde wrote, "I would have written a shorter letter, but I didn't have the time." The memoir of the last live thespian on the way out. (Published: 2005)

4 A Thing of Beauty [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
This story was originally written for an anthology called 2020, and the time-frame was the only requirement. It was written at a time when the Japanese were buying lots of companies in America. How far might they really go, and why? And who is the smart guy here and who is the nikulturni rube? An exploration of a culturally fallen America and Japanese esthetics. (Published: 1973)

5 Entities [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
Commissioned for an anthology where the format was simply to write anything set in the Year 3000 (to be published for the end of the millenium, but it came out late.) A meditation on electronic afterlife something like my short novel DEUS X, but told from a very different angle. The narrator is "dead." Or is he/she/it? The question being "Do I Wake, or do I dream?" And what sort of entities might be designed to live on after the death of the "meatware?" And why? (Published: 2002)

6 La Cuisine Humaine: How to Cook Like a Human Being [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
This is a cookbook in the form of a science fiction story and/or a science fiction story in the form of a cookbook--a treatise on how to cook like a human being written by an alien for aliens. But it will show humans too how to cook almost any form of human cuisine in a few thousand words and roll your own too. Really. I once did this for Chinese cuisine in a magazine in an article much shorter than this. Try it. If aliens can do it, so can you. (Published: 1999)

8 Prime Time [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
A story of the ultimate retirement community, the ultimate virtual reality, and the ultimate couch potatoes who inhabit it. Written a decade or two ago, but getting closer and closer to reality every day. Inspired, perhaps, by a gizmo in a Philip K. Dick novel--the Mood Organ. Dial up any mood you want to experience. But beware of the setting called "The Desire to Watch Television No Matter What's On." Once you dial up that one, you don't leave. (Published: 1980)

9 The Druid King [Secure Mobipocket]
by Norman Spinrad
Vercingetorix, the great Gallic warrior, was both a man of history and a man of myth. Druid King of Gaul, King of One Hundred Battles, he was among Julius Caesar's greatest opponents; his eventual defeat at Caesar's hands was said to prove Caesar's unstoppable power. Yet Vercingetorix has remained, to this day, a French national hero. And now he is the heart and soul of this enthralling and evocative historical novel. Witness to his father's harrowing death, Vercingetorix spends years deep in th... more info>>

10 The Fat Vampire [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
A story entirely about eating, bulimia, weight loss and gain, and the culture thereof in Hollywood. Mouthwatering and gut-busting. No magazine in the US would, uh, touch it with a fork, but it's been published in Ireland, France, and elsewhere. Includes the revelation of the "Hollywood Diet Secret." Eat all that you want to and never gain weight. Unless..... (Published: 1993)

13 Where the Heart Is [MultiFormat]
by Norman Spinrad
Conceived as a pitch for one of the revivals of The Twilight Zone. Magic, voodoo, gris-gris, call it what you like, a way home for a bag-lady. They didn't like the idea but I did, and so I wrote it as a short story. It would work just as well as a radio play, and I've done it as a dramatic reading, even though it required a bit of Rasta-rap. (Published: 1993)
