Bio:

Douglas R. Mason, a.k.a. John Rankine, is an internationally renowned author responsible for some of the most exciting and engaging Science Fiction of the 1970's and 80's. With over forty novels to his name, he was a natural choice to write many of the hugely popular Space 1999 adaptations. Two original books based on the characters followed and proved successful additions to the series.

He was born in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales, in 1918. After leaving Chester Grammar School in 1937, his course at Manchester University was interrupted by war service in Africa. He finally graduated in English Literature and Experimental Psychology in 1948.

After becoming a teacher, he gained a headship at Sommerville School in Seacombe, then at St Georges in Wallasey Village.

He began writing in the early 1960's, producing a string of short stories. This was followed by his first published full length novel - Interstellar Two Five.

1 Satellite 54-Zero [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Satellite 54-Zero. Bauchman was a small god in his own way--the richest man of the richest planet the worlds had ever known. Certainly he had a great deal of power--and he used it wisely. After all, there was that research sphere, presumably serving mankind. Or if not mankind, whom? Bauchman, of course. But what could Bauchman, the most powerful man in the known universe, possibly want that he did not have? Bauchman wanted to be God. (Published: 1971)

3 Dilation Effect [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
After millennia of probing into the galaxy, the long retreat had begun. Centaur was a temporary plug in the dyke that kept out the flood of marauding extra-terrestrials. But her crew of two had their own problem when the Time Beacons began to fail. Still, life has to be lived out, wherever or whenever consciousness is, at the level of the situation that exists there. Ava Mallam and Bob Dogood had a complex maze to tread in sorting out the angles of twin lives in counterpoint. And meanwhile, time... more info>> (Published: 1971)

4 Euphor Unfree [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Euphor Unfree. Russ Playfer tangled with the Establishment when he criticised computer justice. He was in trouble again when he intervened in a move to assassinate Debra Gilbert--a personable experimental psychologist. He had a hard row to hoe, but, aided by a plump Welsh stripper and a stranded sailor, he stood in the way of the Empire Earth organisation in its fantastic bid to set up a new type of world domination. Fast-moving and full of twists, this is another angle on the possible futures f... more info>> (Published: 1977)

5 From Carthage Then I Came [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
There was no hiding place in Carthage either physically or mentally. And the power crisis didn't help the situation. The monitoring complex had a big reserve setup, but the authorities were making stringent economies right now. Every last watt had to accounted for and the president had to have his life giving quota. Today, the sky darkened by the fastest twilight experienced in Carthage and Gaul Kalmar and his companion hurried along in a violet darkness which transformed the city into a Breughe... more info>> (Published: 1966)

6 Horizon Alpha [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Horizon Alpha. Gunnar Holt was different. He was a throwback, head and shoulders taller than his fellow humans on Horizon Delta. For a long time it had kept him out of trouble with the androids, programmed to control those of shorter dimensions. It meant that Gunnar could roam at will, pretty much; and he was curious. Still, his was a very lonely world--he had on one with whom to exchange any exciting discovery he might make. Until, one day, Gunnar met a man. A very old man, just on the verge of... more info>> (Published: 1971)

7 In the Eye of the Storm [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
In the Eye of the Storm. When the Roman peace was a memory and the Conqueror's peace a distant murmur, the land was in limbo. There was an uneasy calm and the jackals were in. It was a waiting time, with a swirl of undercurrents and secret power moves. There was space enough, as ever, for a man and a woman to make a life. But for a hardened warrior and a Thane's new bride? Garth acted out his destiny as Rider in Thane Ordlaf's household. Then, a swing of chance, a savage Northmen's raid and a la... more info>> (Published: 2001)

9 Matrix [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Paradise City had come of age in its own right. Complexity born of complexity had given it a mind of its own, which could be served well enough by the androids who had been created to relieve the inhabitants of the boring routines of admin. Now the time was ripe for the human element to be phased out as being no longer able to contribute anything of importance. Joe Dill, in spite of a clear veto, had gotten himself a technical education and saw further into the long term aims of the tin brain th... more info>> (Published: 1970)

by Douglas R. Mason
Mission to Pactolus R. In the troubled politics of the Rim, the Inter Galactic Organisation's peace-keeping force had a hard row to hoe. Adam Dalton, trading in and out of Outer Galactic Alliance space in his small starship had a clearer view than most of the problems. When asked to revert to I.G.O. service to pull an ill-fated expedition to Pactolus R.--deep in O.G.A. space, he was reluctant to say the least. But pressure was put on. 11 Pitman's Progress [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Pitman's Progress. Chris Pitman's liked his aged American convertible. He knew he was taking a risk running it along country lanes, but he wanted to avoid the motorway. Minding his own business, he became entangled in a scene which is played out every day in all corners of the planet--a hill, a fast sports job, another slower car on the blind-side. He felt he was still conscious, that nothing had really changed. Except, from a new viewpoint, he could still see himself in the car. And the severed... more info>> (Published: 1976)

12 Ring of Violence [MultiFormat]

Violence breeds violence. A chain reaction. An ever widening circle of inevitable cause and effect. As an observer, in one of the small communities in a desert of ash left by a new wave of volcanic disturbance, Boyd Lassen could condemn it. But events pushed him into accepting the attitudes of mind that are its root cause. He is condemned and left for dead. He makes a fantastic journey in a resurrected earth-moving machine. 13 The Darkling Plain [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
In the wasteland of thirteenth century Wirral, Wallasey, the old Island of Strangers, was a forgotten corner of a struggling kingdom. Some liked it that way. Safe, out of reach of the King's law. A tough-minded man like Sir Guy of Barndon could run his affairs in any way he chose. If he believed that power was the only law, there was no one to make an effective argument against the proposition. Certainly, it was unlikely that a wandering scribe, who answered to the name of Edward, son of Siward,... more info>> (Published: 1979)

14 The End Bringers [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Mike Finnigan was a natural-born trouble-maker. This put him very much at odds with his world for a starter. Because his world was geared not to allow trouble for its inhabitants. Specifically, humans wore a built-in wristband which monitored their emotional state at all times. Came trouble, and zoom! An android with a soothing shot, ready to solve all problems. It never seemed to occur to any android that a human could be so damn contrary that they might not like to have all problems solved. Or... more info>> (Published: 1973)

15 The Janus Syndrome [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
Search of an identity had more problems for Dr. Mark Brant than for most. Programmed at a deep level as an agent and then talked into accepting a dangerous mission, which on the surface level he knew he was being two-faced even to himself. The double-headed symbol of Lados might have been coined for him and it was on that troubled planet that the layers of consciousness were peeled away to leave him in possession of a simple core of self. But what does he do with this knowledge? (Published: 1969)

The Phaeton Condition. Once upon a future century, a young man with both feet firmly planted on the ladder of Establishment success discovered that the powers that be--the powers he served--were plotting to lock the planet into a suicidal course for their own profit. For the earth was in the same condition as Phaeton's sun-chariot in the myth--hurtling towards destruction. So, Tom Lockhart had a choice to make. He could pretend not to know what he knew, and protect himself from those who would c... more info>> (Published: 1973)

18 The Resurrection of Roger Diment [MultiFormat]
by Douglas R. Mason
The Museum was not very popular. After all, who wanted to see what life had been like in the old days? When people got bent and stiff with age (ghastly) and kids had diseases. (That's what they called it when you were ill.) Of course you knew the living, moving recreation of scenes from ancient life weren't real people--only androids--but still, they were so realistic it was sort of morbid. Aside from teaching history, it was a puzzle why Central Control kept the Museum going. Still, it made you... more info>> (Published: 1972)

For many centuries, Earth Planet had been under observation from the dying world of Typhon. There was nothing the Typhonians did not know about its physical properties and the life style of its people. From where they stood, they reckoned it was gift-wrapped as a new home for their ancient race. The takeover would bring death or enslavement to the existing population, but then they were only primitives, hardly counted as human by Typhonian standards!
