Bio: I was born in Greenfield, Indiana in 1952 (yes, I'm giving away my age) eight years behind my closest sister and ten years behind my eldest sister. To say that the arrival of a third girl was disappointing is an understatement. My father was the only son of an only son.

I have dim memories of being a talkative, happy child until I contracted Scarlet Fever at age 3 and--probably as a result of a reaction to streptomycin--lost about a third of my hearing. At age eighteen, I married the only boy who ever expressed any interest in me while I was in high school. It would not be fair to list his name or mention details about him because my life quickly degenerated into one of those sad tales of domestic violence that I prefer not to discuss. It's ancient history and I prefer to focus on the positive aspects of life rather than keep looking back and kicking myself for the things I should have done and would have done if I knew then what I know now.

I took a job as a seamstress at Indiana Knitwear in Greenfield and later I worked in clerical positions in the state Welfare Departments in the Accounts & Audits Division. It was back to the factory when other clerical jobs didn't work out. I simply couldn't handle answer the telephones well and that's a problem that still haunts me. After a few unhappy years, I discovered that I could fulfill my dream of a college education by attending IUPUI Saturdays. As my husband worked every Saturday and we had no children, I seized the opportunity.

A few years and two children later, my husband left and life improved greatly. It wasn't easy raising two kids without financial support while dealing with a hostile ex-husband, but I had a supportive family and I'll always be grateful to my parents for taking the children into their home every weekend so I could finish my bachelor's degree in 1989.

I fell in love with computers at work. These marvelous calculators of zeros and ones seduced me with their magic and I decided this was the career I wanted. By entering an "Upward Mobility" program which offered on-the-job training, I became a Computer Specialist even before I completed my four-year degree. After a few years of managing the manufacturing VAXCluster, NAWC reorganized and I became part of a team which managed several computers plant-wide. It was during this time that I began seriously pursuing my dream of a writing career with the encouragement of friends and on-line writing workshops.

I think no one was more surprised than me when I married Greg Dunn, an Electronics Engineer employed at NAWC. We moved to a home in Greenfield, Indiana and both children changed their middle and last names per their request.

Life is a series of ups and downs and 1995 brought the greatest height and depth. I was nominated for the 1995 John W. Campbell Award and the government decided to close the place where both Greg and I worked.

Life was a little scary for me back then and I started attending night classes towards the goal of obtaining a Computer Science degree. My bachelor degree was in General Studies and I feared this wouldn't be good enough for our new corporate employers. This was very time consuming such that I probably didn't complete more than a dozen stories during the time I was taking these courses so I abandoned this plan when I received an opportunity to return to the federal government and work for DCMA. I have never loved a job more than this one as I am constantly busy and frequently challenged.

I spent most of my life in jobs I didn't like and thus I feel very grateful for this opportunity to work in an occupation I love. I wouldn't quit my day job for a lucrative writing contract and I think I represent a very small minority of writers when I say that.

1 The Frog Prince [MultiFormat]
by Linda Dunn
In her introduction to this story, Marion Zimmer Bradley had said: … I would think by now that I've read every twist a writer could find on that overdone idea. That's almost the only advantage you can have in knowing an editor; I've read enough of Linda Dunn's stuff to be a little curious about why an experienced writer would try once more to slip this old idea past me for the three-thousandth time (at least). So I read a page and I was hooked. I wonder why it never occurred to anyone why a prin... more info>> (Published: 1999)

4 Christmas at Ground Zero [MultiFormat]
by Linda Dunn
The story was written and accepted for publication long before 9/11/01 and thus has nothing to do with the tragedy. Instead, this is a character-driven science fiction time travel story in which a meteor is expected to strike the earth on Christmas Day. Rather than flee with their neighbors and a few million other people cramming the roadways and looting along the way, Jason and Teresa choose to stay put and hope the meteor misses them. On Christmas Eve, visitors arrive who claim to be lost and ... more info>> (Published: 2001)

5 Lose Weight Like Magic [MultiFormat]
by Linda Dunn
This is a modern look at witches with a tongue-in-cheek premise about why some people gain weight after marriage while others remain bone thin. This is the kind of story that you want to pass around to all the women in the office, regardless of their weight. The usual comment is: I knew it had to be something like that. (Published: 1995)
