Ben dropped his last token in the slot machine and pulled the crank. One cherry. Two. He held his breath. The final wheel stopped on an image of Old Glory. "Damn." Ben slapped his knee so hard the sound startled the little old lady at the next machine. "Sorry," he mumbled. Stuffing his hands in his coat pockets, he trudged toward the casino exit, chin down, shoulders deflated. He had stretched his stake as far as he could, playing blackjack for most of the day, losing the wad in increments, resorting to the slots only as a desperation measure. In the end, the result was the same. The only money he had left now was bus fare back to L.A. He wasn't spending that. At least in California he had contacts, and therefore some hope of replacing his lost job. He stepped into the desert night. The lights of the Strip blazed around him. Vegas was showing off its pretty side. It all seemed so right. Even now, he couldn't shake the feeling that a trip here would bring him luck. False intuition. He padded away toward his motel. He had already paid for the night's lodging; might as well get his money's worth. He would catch a morning bus.
