We waited a week before I felt comfortable enough to have Shane actually move into the presidential bedroom in the family quarters. Speculation had been running wild as to why Shane had resigned from the Secret Service. Many thought that the recent firefight at the White House had been more than enough for Shane and that he had simply quit. These people obviously didn't know Shane.
That explanation faded quickly once people saw that Shane was now part of the presidential staff, having been appointed as a special assistant to the president. The only ones to know the whole truth were Mary and the vice president, both of whom were beyond happy for both of us.
Today, however, would make everything crystal clear. Just after breakfast, Shane moved his things into the presidential bedroom, and the Secret Service was informed that Shane would be sleeping there from now on. Eyebrows went up and were promptly ignored. Agents who had been close to Shane now appeared a little standoffish.
I decided to confront this change head-on.
"Mary, would you ask the director of the Secret Service to meet me here?"
"Yes, Mr. President," she replied as I passed her desk and entered the Oval Office. It was going to be an interesting day. As I sat down, I found the usual file folder containing presidential correspondence for my review and signature. I was about halfway through when Mary buzzed me.
"Mr. President, the director will be here in about ten minutes. He's in the OEB next to the White House."
"Thank you, Mary. Show him in when he gets here. Also please have my top staff meet in here once the director leaves."
I was ready to announce Shane's new place in the White House. First, I would deal with the Secret Service, then my own staff. It would be a historic first for the Office of the President, at least officially. There was evidence that Abraham Lincoln had had a male companion in addition to Mary Todd, but he kept his man secret.
The door opened and in stepped Director Stevens.
"Good morning, Mr. President," he said as he approached the desk.
"Good morning, Mr. Director, please have a seat," I said, pointing to one of the two chairs in front of my desk.
"What can I do for you, sir?" he asked.
"I want to discuss Shane Thompson's status here at the White House. As you already know, when he left the Secret Service, I appointed him as a special assistant on law enforcement matters as well as other areas. What I want to tell you today is that Shane is also important to me on a romantic and personal level. In fact, he has moved into the presidential bedroom as of this morning."
"I see, Mr. President. Actually, I'm not surprised, given that he left a career that he very much loved with the Service."
"Yes, he did. The reason I've asked to see you is that I want Shane to have his own protection detail when he's not with me. Please consider him to be as important as if he were the First Lady. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir, I do."
"I trust your men won't have any issues at all regarding the safety of Mr. Thompson, which would include any snide remarks. I wouldn't wanna be the agent who was foolish enough to make a joke about this within earshot of Shane."
"Our men and women are professionals, Mr. President, so I don't foresee any problems."
"Good, because I intend to elevate his role here in my administration, and his protection should reflect both that and the personal importance in which I hold Shane. Please make the arrangements today."
"Of course, Mr. President. While I'm here, sir, let me advise you that the intelligence division of the Service sees no indication whatsoever that the Saudis are in any way active in matters pertaining to you. We are working closely with the CIA and the FBI to make sure that they are not planning any further attacks on you or the United States. In fact, there seems to be a great deal of inner turmoil within the royal family over recent events. We'll keep you posted, of course."
"Good! Because if they had continued, I would have been forced to take direct military action against them. It would have thrown the world oil markets into chaos. Please keep me up to date on this issue."
"Of course, Mr. President."
"Thank you for coming; I know I can rely on you personally to see that Shane receives the protection that he now needs. He is very important to me and this administration," I said as I rose to indicate the meeting was over.
"Of course, sir, I'll see to it immediately."
As the director left, Mary came into the office with my little Mary trotting along behind her wagging her tail.
"The visitor with her own bed in here has come to pay you a visit, Mr. President," Mary said, smiling down at little Mary as the terrier made a beeline for my chair.
I bent down and scratched her behind the ears, and when I was done, she went over to her bed and settled in for a mid-morning snooze.
"Mary, will you ask Shane to come in, please?"
Mary smiled and asked, "Is that why the director was here?"
"No. Actually, it was in regards to revoking your White House clearance and escorting you off the property!" I said with a smile.
"Threatening me with a return to sanity will get you nowhere, David," she said, flashing me with her now-famous smile as she left to find Shane.
As I waited for Shane, I returned to signing the unending flow of letters that continuously occupied the file marked with the word "correspondence." Before I could read and sign the second letter, the door opened and in came a smiling Shane.
I got up and walked around the desk, indicating the sofa as to where we would sit and talk. He gave me a puzzled look.
"You feel better now that you've officially moved into our bedroom?" I asked.
Shane smiled. "Yeah, it felt right. The duty agents didn't know whether to watch me or ignore me while I was doing it."
"Well, that's kinda the reason I wanted to see you. I talked with your old boss a few minutes ago and told him of your new status with me. I've told him you are sharing my bedroom, and that I wanted you to have a protection detail as if you were the First Lady. I also told him to make sure his agents keep any social commentary to themselves and that neither you nor I wanted to hear any snide remarks. He assured me that we wouldn't."
"David, I don't want a detail. I'll be with you most of the time and will therefore have the same protection being provided to you."
"You're going to be given duties that normally would be handled by the First Lady, which means you'll have to venture outside the security perimeter of the White House, and I don't wanna have to worry about you. You are getting Secret Service protection, and that's it," I said with finality.
Shane looked at me as if calculating whether this was a battle he could win. Resignation showed on his face when he concluded that he couldn't. "If you insist, but it's under protest," he said.
"Duly noted. Now, I'm going to be meeting shortly with top staff about your assuming additional duties. You should remain for that meeting, I think."
"Of course I will. If I don't, I'll end up kissing babies in a parade somewhere in Wyoming. I need to agree to these additional duties, no?"
"Yes, of course. I'm not going to give you something to do that you would be either offended by or embarrassed to be doing. By the way, before I forget, I want you to pay a visit to Alcatraz and check on the progress of the project. Talk with the construction people and see if they see any weaknesses in the new complex. Try and get out there in the next ten days or so."
"Of course. Now there's something that I'm more than qualified to do. Just don't have me entering cookies in a baking contest, okay?"
I laughed out loud. "A baking contest? Why on earth would I do something like that? Give me some credit, Shane."
Mary entered the office and announced that the top staff were gathered to meet with me.
"Have them come in, please," I said.
Shane and I moved to the two wingback chairs in front of the fireplace and motioned for the staff to take seats on the sofas and other chairs. Present were Chief of Staff Alex Cramer, the director of the office of White House protocol, the social secretary, and various aides.
"Good morning all. I've asked you here to tell you that Shane is taking on new duties as of today. As you know, he has left the Secret Service and is now on my staff as an assistant. He has also moved into the presidential bedroom, and from that you may conclude that Shane is something far greater to me than a special assistant. He is my significant other in the vernacular of the day. As such, I have requested a Secret Service detail be assigned to him just as if he were the First Lady. In that vein, Shane will perform some of the duties typically performed by the First Lady, while keeping in mind that he is a man."
"Mr. President, do you want Shane to have any staff?" asked Alex.
"Yes, Alex, I do. He'll need the full complement that normally works for the First Lady. Obviously, he will not do all the things normally done in that position, but there is no reason he can't perform many of the duties of that office. I know that I can count on all of you to support Shane in the role that he is taking on. Are there any questions?"
"Just one, Mr. President," said the protocol chief.
"Do you wish for Shane to act as host when you're not available for some function as the First Lady would normally do?"
I looked at Shane and he gave me a look that said, "Why the hell not?"
"Yes. Just make sure he is totally briefed on the situation so that he knows what he's doing. If there are no other questions, that's all I have for now."
As everyone got up to leave, the chief of staff said, "Shane, I'll have your new office contact you today and assign assistants."
"Thank you, Alex," replied Shane.
When everyone was gone, Shane turned to me and said, "Well, that went fairly smooth. Why do I have the feeling not everyone is going to be so accepting of this?"
"You're right. There will be flak from some quarters over this, and frankly, I just don't give a damn. They can get over it or resign."
"Actually, David, I was thinking more along the lines of the religious right and their conservative cronies in the House."
"Oh, screw them! What? Am I going to lose their support? You can't lose something you've never had. I don't care what they have to say, Shane. You just do the best you can."
"That goes without saying. Look, I better wander on over to the East Wing and look in on my office. I also have to plan out the trip to San Francisco for Alcatraz."
"Yes, and don't forget to notify the Secret Service. They'll need to do the advance work and everything that normally goes along with that."
As Shane left to learn more about his new world, I returned to my desk, determined to finish the correspondence folder. As I sat down to begin, I heard snoring coming from the floor, which made me smile. Shane was in my bedroom and little Mary was happily sleeping--the world was once again right.
Later that night, when it was time to get ready for bed, Shane and I took Mary for a walk around the private area of the White House lawn that was shielded from public view.
"You know, Shane, I've never felt so 'right' as I do tonight. Our relationship doesn't have to be hidden, and people know that you are important to me on a personal level. Even Mary has stopped giving you dirty looks when you climb into my bed. Now that's real progress!"
"Well, you have to know that I'm pretty happy with the changes myself. I really feel like we're a couple now instead of being the hired help sleeping with the boss. I was so tired of that bookcase route that I think I hate all libraries now."
I chuckled over that and replied, "Yes, no one but my secretary figured out what was going on."
"Mary knew? How could she possibly have known?"
"A latch on one side broke and was noticed by housekeeping and duly reported to maintenance. The repair order went to Mary to sign off on, and she just put two and two together and figured it out. She took great delight in zinging me with little one-liners that let me know that she knew I was getting something on the side."
"That woman is a trip. You're so lucky to have her, though. She is very devoted to you."
"Oh believe me, I know it. I trust her with my life. She would have been impossible to replace if she had said no to the job."
"It's been a long day; can we go in?" Shane asked.
"Sure. Come on, Mary, time to go in," I said.
As we got off the elevator on the residence floor, the duty agent nodded to us and moved down the hallway to his post. Shane, Mary, and I went into my bedroom that now officially became "our" bedroom and began to settle in for the night. The duty agent had reported that I was in for the night, which was relayed to the communications officer, and the White House began to slow down for the night.
As we took off our clothes and climbed into bed, Mary took up her new position on the left side of my pillow. She was used to having her own pillow next to me but was already resigned to the fact that the bed had become more crowded. To her, it was like a new dog had joined the pack and now we were three. Now that she appeared to have approved of Shane, she took it all in stride.
A week later Shane left for San Francisco in order to pay Alcatraz a visit. He left the White House grounds via a Marine Corps helicopter to Andrews Air Force Base, where he boarded one of the White House's fleet of planes to the West Coast. The White House immediately felt like a lonelier place without Shane's presence.
By now word had leaked out to the press that Shane was officially "the president's boyfriend." This was the number one topic on talk shows, both left and right wings. The pill-popper in chief of the right wing was incensed and just had to express his moral outrage over my conduct. He called for an investigation into whether or not Shane had been sleeping with me while a member of the Secret Service. He took to openly referring to Shane as the "First Lady," and his followers lit up his phone lines. One thing I had learned about the right wing was that they were never happier than when they had a three-ring circus going.
Why Shane even qualified as news for Entertainment Tonight was beyond me, but nevertheless he led the evening show for three straight nights. We were the number one topic for The View for the entire week that the news broke. All of the ladies supported me, with the exception of the one Gorgon present on the show.
I talked with Shane frequently during his trip and assured him that it would all blow over when they got tired of the subject. My approach was to simply say nothing more. After hanging up from one such call, Mary buzzed me.
"Mr. President, the director of the CIA is here and needs to see you."
"Show him in, Mary," I replied.
America's top spy entered the Oval Office with a slight frown on his face, and I braced for trouble. He took the seat I indicated and began to speak.
"Mr. President, I've news on two fronts. First, there appears to be a palace revolt taking place in Riyadh. Sources indicate that the next generation of Saudi royalty are replacing the current generation as a result of recent events here in Washington. Most of the next generation were educated here in America and have been more or less Westernized. We understand that they are in shock at the attacks on you and the people of this city."
"Do we have any details as to who is taking over?"
"Not yet, sir, but we will as soon as the picture clarifies. We do know that King Fahd is no longer on the throne. We've received word from Prince Abdullah, who has taken over the Saudi Intelligence Service, that no more hostile actions will ever be taken against the United States. There was mention of reparations for the damage caused by the attack on the White House.
"Finally, we were advised that the United States was more than welcome to re-establish our air bases in the kingdom. All in all, I'd say that they're going to be very anxious to normalize relations with us."
"How soon do you expect the complete picture to take shape? I wanna know who's ruling their country. I'd hate to see fundamentalists take over the government."
"Mr. President, I can't be positive, but I should think that the dust will settle within forty-eight hours."
"Very well, let me know as soon as possible. You said there were a couple of things?"
"Yes, sir. This bit of news is a little more disturbing. Iran appears to be getting ready to test fire a long-range missile easily capable of hitting Israel and any of our ships within the area. This is raising fears greatly in Israel as well as other countries in the area."
"Do you think the Iranians will listen to a request not to launch?"
"No, Mr. President. I think if we ask them not to launch, it will only make them more determined to do exactly that."
"When do you think they'll do it?"
"We estimate by studying satellite photos of their missile test facility that they could launch within five days. The test missile will come down somewhere in the Persian Gulf."
"All right, like I said, keep me posted on both topics. I would love for everyone just to behave for a year so that we could tend to the mountain of domestic issues that need our full attention. Thanks for coming by," I said as the director stood up.
Just as one problem was being settled, another was surfacing.
"Mary, please get me Secretary Gutierrez at State."
A moment later my phone buzzed.
"Mr. Secretary, we've got a new problem, and I want you involved from the start. When can you get over here?"
"Well, sir, I'm in the car now, so I can just divert from my route and be in the Oval Office in ten minutes. Is this an emergency?" he asked.
"No, not yet. Ten minutes is fine. See you then."
As I waited for his arrival, I began to mentally go over what responses I had available if Iran launched. All of the options were unattractive, and I hoped they would listen to reason. The last thing I wanted was an all-out war with Iran. It could very well signal the end of the Middle East as we knew it.
I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down on the sofa just as the secretary of state entered the office. I indicated that he should sit down across from me.
"Are the Saudis acting up again?" he asked.
"No. In fact, they may be taking care of their own problems. No, I need to see you about Iran. They are threatening the launch of a long-range test missile which will be able to reach Israel. Obviously, the Israelis are not taking the news very well. This could very well destabilize the region even further. See what you can do through Iran's allies to get them to cancel the launch."
"I'll get on it right away, Mr. President."
As he left, the phone rang, and Mary informed me that Shane was calling.
"How's it going out there?"
"Fine, Mr. President. I've seen all I need to see and will be heading back tonight. I'll be in the White House by the morning."
"That's great news. How's the project?"
"It's actually ahead of schedule, and it may be open for business in about two months. The contractors appear to have done a really fine job; even the military is pleased."
"Good. It's the best news I've had today."
"Okay, I'll see you in the morning, then," Shane said with a note of anticipation in his voice.
"Can't wait. Be safe."
I sat back in my chair and smiled. My guy was coming home. I definitely didn't like him being away.

The next morning, Mary, who was in her regular position on the pillow next to my head, woke me by growling like a lioness guarding her cubs. When I went to quiet her by putting my hand on her head, I was startled by a kiss silently pressed to my forehead.
"You're back!" I said.
Shane sat down on the edge of the bed and smiled. "Told you I'd be home this morning."
"Yeah, but I didn't expect you this early."
"Well, when you don't have to rely on plane schedules and crowds, you can move fairly quickly. I slept a little on the plane, but I'm tired."
"Well, I've another thirty minutes before I have to get up. Why don't you get in?" I said as I pulled the covers back, revealing my nakedness.
"Now that's a brilliant idea," Shane replied with a smile.
I watched him as he took off his clothes, once again admiring his incredible body. Just the sight of him naked was enough to set my blood to boiling. As he climbed over me to get to his side of the bed, he rested his body on top of mine and smiled. We kissed the kiss of lovers parted and rejoined.
"I missed you, Mr. President, and I can tell by the large object poking me in the lower abdomen that you missed me as well."
"Yes, I missed you greatly. The White House is a lonely place without you here. I never really thought about that aspect of White House life before I met you. I think I'm a better president with you in my life. It reminds me there is such a thing as love in this world instead of just the ugliness I have to deal with constantly."
"Can I remind you that there is also a certain thing in this world called 'making love', my dear?" Shane asked with a kiss.
I turned my head to check on the time and said, "If you can remind me in a little over twenty minutes, the answer is yes," I replied with a smile.
"Better twenty minutes than no minutes," he replied as he traveled down my body, kissing his way to my cock.
It was the fastest twenty minutes I had ever experienced, and if it weren't for the Oval Office schedule, we would have stayed in bed all morning. But as it was, I had presidential duties to attend to.
After a quick cup of coffee, I was on my way to the Oval Office. I heard my new close-in bodyguard Marcus say the familiar words into his hand mic. "Condor One en route to the Oval Office."
Shane left the residence for his new office in the East Wing to meet his staff and get brought up to date on the duties he would be performing as the "First Gentleman." As I walked, I began to think about doing something that would ignite the right wing if I did it: marry the man I loved. The District of Columbia had legalized same-sex marriage along with just over half of the states, and since I loved Shane so very much, maybe a White House wedding would be in order.
I smiled when I thought of the media circus that would unfold over that event. It might even be enough to make certain blow-hard radio commentators have a stroke. For that reason alone, a wedding sounded like a good idea!
"Good morning, Mary, how are you this fine day?" I asked upon arriving at the outer gate to the inner sanctum.
"I'm fine, Mr. President, and I see you are too. Must be someone came home from the West Coast, I should think," she replied.
"I just can't keep anything from you, Mary. It's uncanny how you can read me."
"That's my job, Mr. President... among a thousand other things."
Little Mary and I entered the Oval Office, and I sat down at my desk as Mary lay down in her bed. A minute later I was at work, and little Mary was asleep.
"Mr. President, the attorney general is on the phone for you," Mary advised.
"Good morning, Eric, what's going on?" I asked.
"Good morning, Mr. President. Just a quick briefing on the pending trial for the former speaker of the house and his cronies. All pre-trial motions have been filed and dealt with, and trial is set for late next month. The defendants have rejected any attempt to plea bargain their cases, so we'll go the whole route."
"I understand. Where will the trial take place?"
"Essentially the crimes were committed here in the District, so we'll be in the U.S. District Court in Washington. In view of the offenses and the fact that they were committed against you as well as the country, I'm personally going to prosecute this case. The defense tried to get separate trials for all of the defendants, but the court ruled against that motion, and we're going to have just one trial. Otherwise, it would have taken forever to adjudicate the cases."
"Good, glad to hear that. I was wondering if the trials would end up stretching out over two years or more. Do we have a solid case against them?"
"I'm fairly happy with it, and I'm confident in the outcome, which makes me wonder why the defense was so adamant about not taking a plea deal. As it is now, I will seek the death penalty."
"Well, Eric, I won't interfere with your handling of this matter. As I'm the victim, it would be improper of me to tell you to do something one way or the other. I'm also sure that you wouldn't let me influence your decisions anyway, and that's the way it should be. Will I have to appear in court?"
"It's a possibility. There's enough evidence without you saying that someone tried to kill you, but the defense may issue a subpoena just to attempt to get us to reduce the charges in exchange for your not appearing."
"Well, fuck that, Eric. I'll be happy to appear if it means that the charges won't be modified against that bunch of traitors. Just let me know as far in advance as you can."
"Very well, Mr. President. That's all I have for you today."
"Okay, Eric, thanks for the update."
The rest of the day passed as quickly as all the days before. It was just before five when Shane entered the Oval Office.
"You ready to go?"
"Yes. After dinner I have to come back here and finish some work on budget proposals, but at least we can eat together," I said with a smile.
As Shane and I walked outside with little Mary, Marcus trailed behind reporting our movements to the Secret Service command post. A slight chill was in the air, signaling that winter wasn't that far off. Mary seemed to come alive when the air turned crisp, and she ran from bush to bush sniffing for any woodland creatures that were stupid enough to be out and about when Mary was on the prowl. Finding none, she was ready to re-enter the White House. We entered one of the doors close to the elevator that went up to the residence.
"By the way, I've been assigned a Secret Service code name," Shane advised as we exited the elevator into the residence.
"Oh, am I gonna like it, or is it ridiculous in some way?"
"No, it's fine actually. I'm codenamed Falcon now."
"Does someone in that shop have a thing for birds? First, I'm Condor and now you're Falcon. No imagination whatsoever," I said as I smiled. "Come on, little birdie, let's get changed."
"Little birdie? That's not what you said this morning," Shane said with a laugh.
Just after ten p.m., I finished working on the budget for the day and joined Mary and Shane in the residence. "I hate working this late at night, but at times it has to be done," I said.
"Well, you're done for the day, and now you can rest for a bit before we go to bed. Why don't we go up to Camp David again? It'll be cold up there in the mountains, and we can have a fire at night in the cabin."
"Yeah, that sounds nice. This time you don't have to worry about getting out of the presidential bedroom and into your own before the military aide comes around," I said with a laugh.
"Okay, I'll put it on the schedule tomorrow. Maybe invite a gay member of Congress and his partner along for the weekend?"
"That's a good idea. Lemme think who would be good to take with us, both for company and for politics."
"Always with the politics.... It's a shame that has to be part of the equation."
"That's the life we live, though. Politics is the lifeblood of the White House, and the little perks that the president gets can be used to grant little favors and honors to others, which can be cashed in on later."
The phone rang, and when I answered it, I found the vice president on the line.
"Hello, Victoria, how are you and the kids?"
"Hello, David. We're all just fine here. In fact, both Darren and Brandon were bugging me to ask if you would pay us a visit soon. They really are big fans of yours, you know."
"Ah, that's nice to hear. How is Brandon fitting in with everything in his new world?"
"He had some adjusting to do, but I'm very pleased at the progress he's made. He's a kid that responds to love, and I make sure he knows every day that he's part of this family now and that I look upon him as my son. Darren and he get along fantastically. Darren has the brother now that he has always wanted."
"Great. Look, tomorrow is Friday; why don't we come over, say, Saturday evening. Would that work?"
"That's perfect. In fact, why don't you and Shane come for dinner and stay for a movie?"
"Great. How would you and the kids like to come up to Camp David one weekend with Shane and I?"
"Oh, the boys would love that! You can mention it to them Saturday night."
"Okay, it's a date, then. See you on Saturday around seven?"
"Seven it is."
Shane had been listening, so he knew we were going to visit Victoria and the boys, and he smiled his approval. Shane knew that I had become fond of Darren and that I was interested in Brandon's well-being as well.
"Shall we go to bed? I'm sure you're exhausted from traveling and working today," I suggested.
"Yeah, let's turn in to our bed," he said with a smile.
