LEGEND HAS IT THAT on December 12, 1762 the witch Moll Dyer was burned out of her home by an angry mob. She was found frozen to death in the woods near her home the next morning by a young boy. Some believe that her spirit still walks the land and causes misfortune for anyone who happens upon her. As with most legends, little of the truth about what happened that night remains. You can trust me on that.

Let's start with her name - Moll Dyer. Would you find it surprising to know that her name was really Molly Sullivan and that Moll Dyer was just a name she used to hide her true identity until it was safe? And what of the angry mob? Hmmm? The truth is that there was no mob, only a half-dozen drunken men who raped and murdered her before accidentally setting fire to her house and leaving her to freeze to death on that cold December night. And what of the little boy? I knew him quite well, you know. Did you know that his name was Jonathan, and that he lost his immortal soul to Molly when she awakened the magic that was asleep within him? There's more to this than you thought. Isn't there? I still have the letter that she wrote to him shortly before she died. Would you like to read it? Okay, here it is.

My Dearest Jonathan

One of the things that I will miss the most about my life is spending time with you. You've been a true friend to me Jonathan, and I cannot imagine what this last year would have been like without you and your family by my side. I used up everything that I had to make it to the time when I met you. Spending time with you saved my life. You might not think so, but it's true. You gave me the unconditional love that only a child can give and helped ease the pain of being away from Tara and Megan. Through you, I could imagine what they were like, the things that they talked about, and the smiles on their faces.

Please tell my family that I will miss them. It is my sincere wish you will get to know and love each other. Perhaps they will become a part of your family as I have, someday. Always remember that none of this was your fault. It will be many years before you will have the wisdom to understand what has happened and be able to put it in perspective. Tyman exposed you to how ugly the world can be when people are driven by hate. I hope that our explorations of the mind and the love that we shared gave you a glimpse of how beautiful it can be when we love each other

Do not focus your energies on the bad things that happen in life, especially my death. We all die sooner or later. It is inevitable. All we can hope is that our time on this earth contributed to the greater good and made a difference in the world. Did my life make a difference? I certainly hope so, but you can be the judge of that. If I've taught you nothing else, I hope you have learned that love is the most precious gift that you possess. Everything that you are flows from your ability to love, and you have so much of it to give. Seek it out, and when you find it, never let it go. In the end, it is those with whom we share our love who will never leave us, even in death. I will find you again my beautiful child.

All of my Love,

Molly

I can't tell you how many times that I've read this letter, trying to understand the bond that Jonathan and Molly shared. I find this letter to be beautiful, but also very frightening. Just what did she mean when she wrote, "It is those with whom we share our love who will never leave us, even in death."? She wasn't lying. I can tell you that much. Sometimes, I wish she had been. Was she a witch? To be honest, I don't know what she was. What I do know is that the legend says nothing about the people who loved her, and the trail of tears that they cried in the years that followed her murder.
