"Get out of bed!" my mom shrieked. "If we're late again we'll lose our jobs and you know what that means."
For a solid week we worked past six p.m. every night and all of the muscles in my body were aching. It felt like I had not even gone to bed and I didn't want to move, let alone get up.
"Mom, do I have to?" I protested.
"You know you do," she said. "Your dad can't work and we need the money."
This got me thinking about the last time my dad and I played together. It was a hot sunny day. We threw the ball back and forth and he told me how he had been recruited to play for the Yankees as a catcher. He decided to not do it because he wanted to get married to my mom and settle down.
Being only six years old at the time, I said, "Wow, that makes mom pretty special, doesn't it?"
