"No English," Max's mother replied, ripping the baby away from Kassie.

"Whoa, ma'am!"

Kassie held up her hand. "She's okay."

The nurse looked at Kassie then back at Max's mother as she began inspecting him. The baby screamed. Kassie was dark skinned and the baby was not blonde hair, blue-eyed grandkid Max's mother wanted. Max's mother glared at her and then at the baby. She said something in a language Kassie couldn't understand.

"He look like you." His mother said in a nasty tone.

"I know. Thank you." Carefully, she sat up to recover her shivering son and held him to her breast. He nursed happily.

With the baby back close to her skin, it felt comforting. She ignored the ungrateful glimpse from his mother and then back at Max. The name floated into her as if God whispered it her himself. "His name Michael John Masters," she announced in a strong voice.

"Michael? Why that name? Is one of your boy toys named Michael?" Max said nastily.

"Me don't like name," his mother replied in her broken English.

"It doesn't matter what you both like. His name is Michael. Now if you'd both excuse me, my son would like to nurse--in private."

The nurse shooed them out. "It's time to go."

Max and his mother bitched the whole way down the hallway.

"Michael is a good name for him, strong and noble." The nurse attendant stated as she began to close the door behind her.

Kassie cracked her first real smile since first seeing her son. "He is my angel."

"I'll keep them out as long as I can. Get to know Michael. Enjoy your silence." The plump, brown skinned nurse smiled a heavenly smile.

Kassie stared down at Michael. "Maybe there were so nice people left on the earth."
