Salon Style

by Tabitha Rayne

"I'll do it for you, Dane." Selena casually looked over her shoulder as she crossed the open-plan living area to the kitchen.

"Really?" Dane raked his fingers through his hair and checked himself out in the mirror. "It is really long, Selena. Think you can handle it?" He looked at her reflection as she helped Jim turn the bacon.

Selena picked out a crispy morsel and tossed it into her mouth. Delicious. It was becoming a tradition in their house that Jim's friend Dane would come over for a bacon brunch, then both boys would go off to watch football or whatever it was that men did on a Saturday afternoon that involved them coming home drunk and smelling of kebabs by seven o'clock in the evening.

"Yeah, Dane, seriously, she's really good." Jim waved the spatula around for

"All right then, Vidal Sassoon, let's do it."

Dane sat before Selena on a dining chair in the middle of the living room while Jim continued tinkering with the breakfast. She stood in front of him and spread her weight evenly through her feet and legs. Taking Dane's face in both hands, she swept her long fingers up into his hair, stretching it back off his face. He looked at her briefly, then closed his eyes. Selena felt tiny butterfly's wings begin to tremble in her stomach. He was right. It was too long. They all knew he had a job interview on Monday and he was nervous.

"So, Selena," Jim said with his eyes still closed, "where did you learn to cut hair?"

"Oh, you know," said Selena vaguely and lifted the scissors. "Here and there."

"Don't you mean, hair and there?" Jim shouted from the kitchen.

"Ugh, Jim, you're getting worse!" Selena called back in mock anger, though in truth, she was glad of the distraction. The butterfly in her tummy had started to flutter and she felt strangely nervous standing there with Dane at the mercy of her scissors. She tried to shake the feeling. It was Dane, for God's sake. They'd been friends forever.

Her mind started racing along with her heart and she knew she had to speak to break the spell.

"So what do you fancy, Dane?" Damn it! Wrong question. Selena berated herself as Dane opened one eye with a quizzical look.

"I mean, how do you want me to do it?" Damn. "I mean...your hair..."

Dane sat up a little in his seat and Selena could tell he knew she was flustered. He smiled his usual goofy smile, but suddenly, it wasn't goofy -- it was dazzling. His strong jaw was peppered with the beginnings of a weekend beard and his lips were fuller than she remembered. Oh no, not now. Not Dane.

She took a breath and tried to focus.

"Well, not too short. Much like it is, I guess." Dane seemed calm and Selena inwardly applauded his discretion as she moved around him. At least from behind he wouldn't see the lust brewing in her face. She cast her eye over to Jim, who was now buttering the rolls for the bacon. He caught her eye and winked. What did that mean? She was getting paranoid; Jim always threw her cheeky winks and smiles. She stared at Dane's thick, lush hair and pushed her hands through it once more. Static buzzed on her fingertips, making her twitch. Why did she agree to this?

There was only one thing to do: cut. She lifted her scissors and sliced through the first lock. It slipped gracefully to the ground and landed with a soft thud. She lifted the next section and snipped. The sound of the blades shearing past each other made her mouth water and she gave them an extra snipping in the air to cast off stray strands. The butterfly had sneakily made its way down to her panties and came to rest in between her legs, fluttering softly as Selena greedily observed the strength in Dane's back and shoulders through his shirt. As long as she stayed behind the chair and out of sight, she would be fine, she thought.
