He smiled and it turned her insides to sand. "No. The only thing that's clear is the beautiful angel who breathed life back into me."

She didn't think she was beautiful and she surely wasn't an angel. Her memories of them were frightening--the angel who had dragged her out of the raging floodwaters she was in and then gave her the chance to live. He was beautiful. Too beautiful to set her eyes upon for very long. He was perfect, but his eyes were dead. It wasn't something she had dwelled on long. When his wings wrapped around her, his power had changed the very makeup of her soul. For a split second, she had thought she was in heaven and then the pain started. The angel had looked upon her apathetically, not caring that she had writhed during the transformation.

"You're sweet to say that, Jacob. I hope you get your memory back. I'm sure you have someone looking for you who misses you." She turned into the parking lot and shut off the car. Before her was the houseboat that she had lived in for years. Seth didn't understand how she could live on the water all the time when they handled storms, but she loved it. She felt right at home with the sea rocking her to sleep. She got out of the car and watched the sun begin its descent under the horizon. The day had been long and it would be good to relax and unwind.

"Maybe I shall remember, but I have this feeling something was brewing at home. Maybe being away for now is a good thing."

She shrugged. She understood the idea of wanting to escape. "Come inside and we'll see what I have in my kitchen cabinets." Her stomach rumbled.

Jacob followed her inside. She headed into the bathroom and then went into the kitchen to start dinner. She opened her refrigerator. There wasn't much on the shelves. Shit! This is not turning out to be my day. Well, it's either cardboard-tasting frozen pizza or takeout. I'm going to vote for takeout. She ran a hand through her hair and closed the refrigerator door. When she did, Jacob was on the other side. She jumped. She hadn't even heard him walk across the tile.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you."

She waved the surprise off and forced a smile. "Don't worry about it. Well, I can throw a frozen pizza in the oven or we can do takeout. I apologize, but I forgot to go to the grocery store and--"

He reached out and caressed her face, silencing her. A puff of energy washed over her from his touch. It was a soft caress that wrapped around her and made her feel calm. He wasn't going to hurt her. Cecilia began to say something else when his eyes captured hers. He was peering deep into her soul. She knew then that he wasn't a normal guy. Her gut told her to be frightened of this man, but the power that had wrapped around her, reassured her that nothing bad was going to happen to her.

"Cecilia, you don't have to cook anything for me. My hunger isn't for food." He ran his finger down her cheek. She shivered from the contact. It had been a while since a man had touched her in any kind of romantic way. Sure, her clients hit on her all the time, but they weren't looking for anything serious. All they wanted was a tumble in the hay with a noncommittal grunt in the morning. Staring at Jacob, she wasn't sure what he wanted, but the longer she peered into his eyes, the more she realized there was more to him than what he was telling her.

"What do you want?" The answer was apparent when he leaned in and brushed his lips lightly across hers, barely a kiss, but something akin to the merest sweep of a feather across her mouth. She didn't have time to react before he pulled away. She licked her lips, tasting a slight minty flavor.

"Isn't it obvious? I want to show you how much I appreciate you saving me from the frothy waters of the deep. It's the least I can do. And you are a most desirable woman."

She blushed. "Thank you." A flush of warmth ran through her when he ran his finger down her neck and along the strap of her tank top. The longer he touched her, the more she knew that he wasn't normal. When she tried to reach out to her steed, Nala, she was unable to sense her at all.

"I hear the hesitation in your voice. What bothers you?"

She stepped away from him and her head cleared. "What are you?"

His smile dazzled her for a second. The atmosphere lightened and there was a shift in the air. She was a little uneasy with him. He stepped toward her again and reached out to touch her once more, but she backed up until she hit her shoulder on a cabinet door. The pain helped to bring her back to reality.

"I won't hurt you. I could never hurt the angel who rescued me."
