Great Good OK Poor

The short and long of it: neither cats nor garlic can be completely possessed or controlled by you or me. You and I have no choice but to yield to fate. Not Sadie.

Sadie, at eighteen years old, continued to prowl through life as if every dawn and every dusk was her very first. Over the years she tangled in field and forest with raccoons, badgers, foxes and coyotes. One evening as Sadie strolled across the field, she saw me waiting on the deck and began to run. She did not see the red-tail hawk drop out of the clouds and plummet down through the sky. I did not have time to scream.

Apparently alerted by the feel and sound of compressing wind or windy doom, Sadie, at the last moment, flopped onto her back and clawed at the chest and belly of the hawk. The astonished bird lifted herself out of range of Sadie's claws and, deserting several floating feathers, climbed in dizzy spirals back up into the clouds.

Sadie rose, shook herself and continued her run toward home.

I jumped from the deck, caught the rumpled ball of fur into my arms and held her. I was prepared to call my vet. No need. There were a few minor scratches on her belly, a bit of blood oozing from her chin, but she was purring.
