I have made every attempt to write the book so it is easy and enjoyable to read, and to keep the concepts in it non-technical. Just the same, the ideas here are based on the combined evidence of many thousands of researchers all around the globe, over many years. The tools I describe have worked for huge numbers of people whose suffering was eased.
Each chapter is set out in an easy-to-navigate way, with explanations and definitions interspersed with case stories to demonstrate the points I am making. At the end of each chapter, you will find a section entitled 'Summing up'. In this section, I have summarized the main points and concepts of the chapter for easy reference. Popular wisdom distinguishes between mind and body. This is false. A person is a single, unified being. Thinking and feeling are done with far more than the brain: they involve the whole body. Likewise, physical action is just as much a brain activity as a muscular one. In this book, I show you how to use this fact in attacking emotional problems.
Not everybody succeeds in overcoming unwanted emotions. The reason is habit.
We couldn't live without habits. They are activity patterns that are so well-practiced that they become automatic. A learner-driver thinks of the sequence of actions needed for doing a hill start as a list of consciously controlled decisions. An experienced driver will spoil the task by thinking this way: the automatic habit works as if it was a single unit. The same is true of playing a musical instrument. Get a competent pianist to think of her finger actions, and s/he will stumble.
We all know that habits are hard to change. And the more automatic and 'overlearned' a habit has become, the harder it is to change it. Habits of thought have been with us for longer, and are used muchmore often, than any habits of action. They are hard to change. Habits of emotion often derive from early childhood, and are the hardest of all to change.
And yet, if your emotions are a burden to you, then that's what you must do: change these habits of thought and feeling. THIS CAN BE DONE, but it is difficult. And the bad habits do come back. Fortunately, if you've got rid of a habit once, you can get rid of it again.
So, don't expect magic solutions. Don't expect a single-step recovery. You will need weeks, maybe months, of hard work, and even then the bad habits will occasionally return to pester you. But you can do it. The evidence is that other people, just like you in many ways, have managed it.
