I was standing in the back row at Susan's funeral when the deceased herself walked up to watch.
My heart skipped a beat, although I had been expecting her for some time, and sweat broke out around my collar. Susan wore a pair of corduroy jeans, a university sweater, and sneakers. Her blond hair, smartly cut, barely touched the hem at her neck. She stared at the coffin and her family at the grave, oblivious to me. I looked again. The two years since I had seen her last had completed her countenance. She had been twenty-four at the time of her death, out of the blush of youth, but unmarked by age. The added maturity suited her.
