His hand brushed over her thigh, she sighed and moved her leg restlessly. The satin sheets burned her skin, scorching her from neck to ankle as she twisted over their silkiness. His hands were relentless, following each curve of her body, over the shadowy cleft between her breasts until his fingertips caressed her nipples, played with them, toyed with them. She bit down hard on her lower lip to keep from moaning aloud. And the assault on her senses continued. His long, daring fingers probed between her thighs, finding the hot wetness that invited him. "Open to me." His voice came as a deep, velvety-soft whisper. She couldn't picture the man as anything but hard, all strength and muscle.
Helpless against the desires curling within the pit of her stomach, she opened her thighs and welcomed the hot, steely length of his cock. It touched the opening of her sheath, gliding over the glistening dampness, teasing her, taunting her, until she thrashed back and forth across the sheets.
The tip pressed against her clit, moving and grinding until Anna almost sat straight up in the bed. Her hair clung in damp strands to her face and with gentle hands, her lover brushed them away, soothing her, calming her.
"I need you," she whispered, desperation lining her voice.
"In due time, my love, in due time."
She bucked her hips, inviting yet demanding at the same time. And then, just when she couldn't take it any more, he...
The phone shrilled loud and long, dragging Anna out of the torrid, nightly fantasy and back into the cold, cruel harshness of reality. She came awake with a groan, slapping her hand to her forehead. Damn it! Why now? Pushing the thick mass of tangled curls away from her face, she silenced the painful sound by lifting the receiver from the cradle. "What?"
"Is that any way to greet your best friend?" Liz sounded damnably cheerful at so early an hour. Anna wished she could wake up like Liz did, but without her three cups of coffee, she functioned like a zombie, especially since she'd moved into this apartment and discovered a dream lover existed within its walls.
Or perhaps he didn't really exist. Maybe his touch was simply a product of an overworked imagination. She spent so much time surrounded by books, immersed in the fantasies within the pages that perhaps, out of sheer desperation, she'd created her own.
"Hello?" Liz's fingernail tapped against the receiver. "Are you still there?"
"What do you want?" Anna flopped back against the mattress, sliding one hand beneath the sheets to test the reality of her fantasy. The warm wetness attested to the strength of the dream.
"Did I wake you?"
"Yes." Anna felt strangely bereft, empty inside now that the dream had faded. Drawing her hand out from between her legs, she clutched the sheet up to her neck and wondered if her lover would return tonight.
"It's after eight."
"So? It's Saturday." And when she slept, her lover came.
"I thought you were meeting your mom for breakfast at eight-thirty," Liz gave the reminder in a perky voice which made Anna want to limit the woman's coffee intake.
Did he have dark hair and enticing silver eyes as she pictured in her dream? Were his hands large with long, sensual fingers? Shuddering a little, Anna forced a reply to her friend's question. "She canceled last night because her boyfriend made other plans for them." A long pause followed as if Liz awaited Anna's continuance of the conversation. She debated whether or not to talk about the dream, but then, Liz was her best friend. She told her everything. "I had another one of those dreams last night."
Liz sucked in a sharp breath. "You mean those wicked, wild dreams?"
"The same. I swear I haven't gotten a good night's sleep since I moved into this apartment." Anna jumped a little as the walls seemed to whisper to her, calling her name. Her eyes widening, she searched the room and saw nothing. She was still alone.
And still going crazy.
"Ooh, maybe it's haunted."
"I don't think a ghost could be doing the things this guy is doing to me."
Liz sighed, the sound of envy. "Honey, I'd give my right arm to be able to have even an inkling of what you have. I know it isn't real, but I'm here to tell you that reality can really suck. Sam's in bed by ten and out like a light by ten-fifteen. That gives us fifteen minutes for foreplay and sex. Sam's idea of the former is to turn off the bedroom light and the actual sex usually takes about five minutes and I'm being generous here. God, to have a secret lover."
Anna glared at the phone while her heart slammed against her breastbone. "I don't have a secret lover. I have fantasies. They're different."
"They're incredible," Liz gushed. "So get yourself together and meet me at the café for coffee and bagels. I'm buying and you're talking." She ended the phone conversation before Anna could respond.
