"Graves must be stopped. The man is completely out of control!" Wilson slammed his fist down on the wrought-iron table, making all our drinks jump. I quickly rescued my gin-and-tonic before he could do it again. "He's purchased over two months just in the last week." Wilson's eyes flashed with that particular intensity which meant that very soon someone, somewhere would be sorry.
Cohen sipped his bourbon with a trembling hand. "He bought out Mahoney on Friday. Three hundred million." He lowered his voice. "Any one of us could be next. Any one."
I leaned back in my chair and stretched. It was a beautiful afternoon: the sun was bright and warm, but a few skittering clouds and a hint of chill in the breeze gave promise of an early autumn. All around us, the Berkshires hovered like mounds of bright candies: lemon, orange, raspberry and cherry. I sighed. It was altogether too nice a day to spend worrying about Graves and his machinations.
Takamatu steepled his fingers and stared straight ahead, striking the pose of a Zen master in deep concentration. His act fooled no one; Takamatu was third-generation New York. "Mr. Graves has betrayed the fundamental principles of our club. He has abused the trust that we placed in him. Action is necessary."
For long moments there was silence; then Smythe shook her head. "We seem to be agreed, gentlemen." She riffled a stack of printouts that documented Graves' abuses. "Only one question remains: What action can we possibly take? How can we touch him?"
Even Wilson had no answer for that one.
