Great Good OK Poor

The stranger walked up past the high tide line and onto the main street that fronted the village, heading for the Wolf Clan longhouse at the end. It was not easy to miss, being the largest and most ornate. Red and black crests covered the front, not only those of the Wolf Clan, but Bear, Otter, and Eagle as well. He smiled a bit thinly at that last one. The Eagle looked vaguely like Thunderbird, an affectation. He had heard that the clan chief was ambitious, and dreamed of an alliance with that powerful clan.

The stranger was lean, dressed in black buckskin and bearhide boots, with horn-strip armguards in the same dark hue. A flint dagger and a short stabbing spear with a worked obsidian blade were his only weapons, but the easy grace of his movements and the look in his eyes stayed the young warriors who might have challenged him. He came to a stop at the entrance to the longhouse and addressed the oldest woman there.

"Grandmother," he greeted, "this one is called Tanaksan, and has come long and far to see your elders and trade with your village. Will they be within?" The old woman looked up at him with just a hint of recognition and saw more than young eyes might have.
