Her skin was so grey and desiccated that it looked like leather. She resembled an ancient voodoo doll, or one of those age-old mummies the museums were so fond of displaying. Her little remaining hair was white and fine, more like spidersilk than hair--almost as though cobwebs had gathered about the head. Wrinkled skin was stretched tight over very obvious bones. The lips were colorless, dry as the rest of her face. Her body was hidden by the covers of the bed on which she lay.
She looks dead, Llodes thought to himself. But why not? She was as old as some of those museum mummies. Only the terrible spells cast with the talismans and dusty bottles which fileld the suite kept her alive at all.
Coco opened her eyes. They, too, were grey. Once, those eyes had been blue, but as time had passed, first years, then decades, then centuries, their color had faded like the ink on ancient parchments. Everything had faded. Only the brain was still strong, the lump of wrinkled grey tissue behind the wrinkled grey face. The eyes twitched once, then settled on Llodes. Cracked lips parted; then voice was nasal and scratchy. "What do you want?"
Llodes nodded his head in lieu of a formal bow. "The Oora have risen to mate. Our worlds are in danger. Itelt has fallen. Hala Gydig is under attack at this moment. You must do something."
She lay so still that Llodes feared she'd fallen asleep. Should he try to wake her? His stomach twisted in revulsion at the thought of touching that leathery skin. He was ready to call for an attendant when she spoke. "My mind wanders. Who are you?"
"I am Llodes hough Daascis, Khedive of the Council. You must help us."
