They all heard the screaming, the flapping of enormous wings, and the fluttering sound at about the same time. "Where's that coming from?" Charlie asked, as he stood up rubbing his hands together to warm them. Touching his wife's body had left them ice cold. "I think it's coming from overhead." Todd shone a flashlight upward, toward the source of the sound. A powerful beam cut through the darkness revealing movement in the sky above them. He couldn't believe his eyes. The figure of an enormous creature, was struggling to gain altitude, flapping its bat-like wings frantically. Then he realized what the creature was carrying as the beam of the flashlight struck the figure struggling in its grip. "Oh, God Dad, it's got Jan. That's Jan up there. We have to help her." "Todd, please help me. Todd, do something!" Jan screamed at the top of her voice, sending chills of helplessness down Todd's spine. "Mike, quick, get on your radio and get our helicopter in the air. Tell them what happened, and tell them they're headed due southwest. I'll call Randall." Jerking out his cell phone, he quickly dialed Randall's cell phone number. "Randall," he said when Randall answered, "listen up. Jan Peters has been captured by one of those flying creatures. They're headed southwest. I'm thinking she'll eventually end up where you are. Maybe these creatures don't know we destroyed their hole yet. Keep your eyes open, and if anything develops, call me right away." "I'll do that, Charlie," Randall said. Charlie pressed the END button. Turning to Todd, he told him, "We'll do everything we can, son. Soon as the helicopter gets here, they'll search for them. I can't shoot it down, I might hit Jan." "Thanks, Dad. Poor Jan, she's had a terrifying time of it. I'm really concerned about her. We have to help her before something else happens. If those things harm her, I'll kill every one of them." He trembled and something in his stomach stirred. A lump developed in his throat and stayed there as he visualized Jan being held by the rough claws of one of the creatures. His heart pounded against his chest. A sense of urgency told him they had to hurry. There wasn't much time and he knew it. Charlie placed his arm around his son. Todd was hurting and he wanted to comfort him, except he didn't know the words that would tell them things would be all right. He had never lied to Todd, or any of the other kids, either, and he wasn't going to do so now. "Todd, you can rest assured I'll do everything I can for Jan. We just have to pray and do what we can. We all have suffered," Charlie reminded him. "We will get her back, if it is at all possible."
