Life must be governed by a dramatic formula, Melisande thought; they found him at the last booth. Despite the moderate temperature typical of the Bell, Book, & Canteen, Stephen hadn't taken off his coat or scarf. He sat swaddled in the booth, staring down at the mug in front of him. He didn't even seem to notice that his wife and sister had arrived. Only when Melisande picked up his mug did he show signs of life. "Hi, Mel. Hi, sis." Melisande took a small sip of the mug's contents and made a face. "Eeeyugghhh! What in the world is that?" "A Mefisto-in-Byronics," he said. "I felt like ordering something dark and foul. Matches my mood at the moment." He looked up at his wife's expression and added, "Your eyes are shining; I'm guessing you passed it. Congratulations to a new Senior Thaumaturge!" "Thank you, kind sir," Melisande said, and, pushing her raven hair out of the way, leaned over to kiss her husband. Then, as she sat beside him and Laurel and Edward took seats opposite the couple, she continued, "But this doesn't make sense. I thought you'd be pleased that we both passed our Ordeals. Unless--" "Ah yes, the 'unless.'" He slumped further in his seat. 'Unless' it is, beloved new wizard. I failed the Ordeal."
