But I don't want to be a virgin!" Stephanie cried. "I hate it, I hate it!"
"Hush that," her mother scolded. "What do you think you are? And what will the neighbors think, if they overhear you?"
"I don't care," Stephanie cried again. "I don't like it. Anika is already three months' pregnant, and due to marry her lover next feast day. And Tomira has laid with half the boys in the village, and maybe almost as many of the girls, and here I am, never touched in all my days. Why should I be punished for virtue? And I've been told I'm pretty!"
"Pretty what?" Lauranne asked wickedly. Her younger sister was chubby, and with a wise attitude to match. She licked at a spoon half covered with sweet syrup. "I think," she drawled slyly, "that you're just afraid of going to the dragon next feast day."
