I no longer believe they'll hang me, but I know there?s a
possibility they'll lock me up for the rest of my life and
I'll never be able to cuddle my children again, or go down
to the river to help my mother with the family washing.
Sitting in my cell in England the night before my trial
starts, I can't sleep and so I?m writing; page after page of
my neat unjoined-up writing pouring onto the lined
paper. I want to get out everything that?s inside my head
and heart, to stop them both from aching so.There have
been so many things I?ve kept quiet about, believing I
should be ashamed, or perhaps just discreet, but I don?t
want to hold them all inside my brain any more. I don?t
think anyone should be made to feel ashamed of the
things they choose to do, if they choose for the right reasons.
I want to explain how it all happened, how I came to
travel so far and end up in so much trouble when so
many people along the way thought things would turn
out differently for me. People read about my story in the
English papers and made their judgements on the lurid headlines. Many of those men from around the world
who knew me when I was working in the bar in Manila
showed me great kindness and took an interest in how
I'd come to be there with them in their hotel rooms, but
I doubt they could really picture the childhood I was
describing to them, or understand what life was like for
my family when there was no one sending home money.
The local newspaper journalists in England who wrote
the headline phrases like ?killer wife? and ?Filipino exvice
girl? couldn't be expected to understand the stranger
in their midst with her different looks, different language,
different tastes in food and different past.
I don't know what will happen tomorrow when people
I?ve never met will decide whether or not I am a bad
person who should go to jail for life, but at least I?m sorting
out in my mind everything that has led me to this
sleepless night.
