Chapter 1

Matt and Katy Fielding trudged wearily along the Mall. They had almost reached their destination. Buckingham Palace rose ahead of them in all its regal splendour. The day had been hot and humid, and hours of sight seeing had drained them of all their energy. It had been one of those rare days in London of almost tropical heat. The kind of day that invariably leads to a summer storm. Matt looked up into the sky. It was getting more and more overcast by the minute, and ominous, heavy black clouds threatened a torrential downpour at any moment. Matt and Katy's parents, Pete and Jane Fielding, were growing increasingly anxious to move on.

"Well, you've seen Buckingham Palace now. I think we should go before it starts raining," Pete Fielding sighed irritably. "We should be heading back to the Tube. You know how long it's going to take us to get back home."

Matt stared at his father in annoyance. He had dragged them half way across London to see the Palace, and now they were here, he wanted to leave almost straight away.

"We've only just got here, Dad!" Matt grumbled, his anger barely concealed.

Pete Fielding chose to ignore his son's angry outburst. Matt glanced up at the sky, the black cloud above him parted suddenly to reveal a bright, large, cigar like shape, which seemed to hover silently above the famous building. Matt prodded his sister in the ribs.

"Hey, what did you do that for?" Katy grumbled, rubbing her side.

Matt pointed to the mysterious object in the sky. "Up there. Look!"

"I don't believe it! It's a UFO," Katy stared in disbelief.

Matt turned to his parents. They seemed totally oblivious to what was going on. Matt could not understand how his mother and father could not see the UFO. It was quite large, at least a hand span long.

Matt turned to his younger sister, Katy. "How come Mum and Dad can't see it?"

"They're not the only ones. I don't think anyone here can, except us. We're the only two people who can see it," Katy replied nervously.

Matt glanced around, Katy was right, no one else could see it. When Matt turned to his sister again, he noticed that she was visibly shaken.

"This is freaking me out. I want to go home!" Katy exclaimed loudly, but not loudly enough for her parents to hear. They were still completely unaware that anything unusual was happening.

Suddenly, and inexplicably to Pete and Jane Fielding both of their children began walking much faster, and more purposefully towards London Underground. The Fielding family found the rest of their journey home uneventful, and they arrived back at their home in nearby Surrey after about an hour, tired and laden with bags from their day out in the Capital.
