Poker, in all its formats, has
always been portrayed as
consummately ?cool? ? not a
past-time for the faint of heart.
It leads the plot in countless
movie classics, from ?The
Cincinnati Kid? of the 1960?s,
starring the smouldering Steve
McQueen, to Guy Richie?s
genre-breaking ?Lock, Stock
and Two Smoking Barrels? of
the 1990?s. Poker has a well-earned reputation as a sexy
game with a good measure of
risk and adventure.
Even the record industry has
been known to get in on the act.
Teenage boys and grown men
alike seem unable to restrain
their air guitars at the opening
chords of Motorhead?s ?The Ace
of Spades?. And who hasn't had
a karaoke moment with Abba?s
?Winner Takes it All? at some
drunken wedding party or other?
There is great debate surrounding the true origins of
the game. It is said that several
centuries ago the Persians
played a game similar to poker,
and that the Germans also had
a version called ?Pochen?,
which was based on bluffing. It
is thought to have been the
French who originally brought
their game of ?Poque? to New
Orleans, from where its
popularity spread. ?Poque? soon
became know as ?Poker?, and
with the passing of time, the
game has developed into various hybrid versions, such
as ?Seven-card Stud?, ?Draw
Poker?, and the game we are
interested in, ?Texas Hold?em
Poker?.
Texas Hold?em poker is now
the most popular game of
poker played in casinos and
online across the globe.
