"It looks so close. It's almost as if I could reach out and touch it," Helen remarked breathlessly as she pressed her forehead to the elevator's thick transparent pane that separated her from the thin and poisonous atmosphere of Jupiter. Far below she could see an upper level torroidal disturbance move slowly from right to left as they followed mighty Jupiter's rotation. She could even make out the wisps of the storm's arms to either side.
Her pilot snorted as he glanced over her shoulder. "Take an awfully long arm to do that. Top of Jupe's clouds are still thousands of klicks below us."
Helen pulled back. It took an act of will to wrench her eyes from the awesome sight. "So far?" Suddenly the fragility of the shell around her and the pitifully thin cable on which their elevator travelled became all too obvious. If the thread from the synchronous station that extended into the atmosphere were to snap they would be pulled down into Jupiter's massive gravity well. She shivered at the prospect. Why had she fought so hard to come here to this far-flung outpost of humanity?
