Kailen awoke in the dark. And again knew she was not alone. For a moment she thought it may have been Jolie coming by to check on her, but she didn't smell like the wind and rain.
"Hello, Marc," she spoke sleepily as her senses came fully awake.
In the dim light coming from the street, she could see him leaning against the doorframe. A still silhouette.
"How are you doing, darlin'," he asked.
She rolled over on her side, careful to keep her body under the covers. She should have been furious and demanded why he was in her house, but the questions would not voice themselves, as she felt a quiet comfort in his silent presence. She watched him a moment longer before speaking. "I guess you heard through the grapevine, huh?"
"You can say that. Don't much happen around here the locals don't know about." Marc crossed the room to the doors leading to the balcony and opened them. He gazed outside and absently rubbed his hand across the back of neck as he thought. "I need to know if you'll still be able to leave as we planned."
The words rushed out, almost as if he were undecided about their plans.
She stayed quiet, not questioning his statement but not challenging either. Looking beyond him, she watched the night sky. The moon and stars were brilliant. Visible even though the streetlights threatened to fade them out. The storm that passed earlier had cleared out most of the haze. A fresh scent drifted on the slight breeze. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply before she spoke again.
"I'll be ready."
He looked back, his face dark in the shadows. "Will you?"
