It was an exciting ride home. My emotions were high. I was so happy to have this wonderful new born, but my happiness was possible because of someone's pain. Since this was a private adoption, the transfer was made outside the doors of the hospital. All the way down the long corridor I walked beside the wheelchair that carried my precious little bundle in the arms of the biological mother. We finally reached the front door, and went outside where our cars were waiting. The child-mother laid her newborn in my arms with a whisper, "I know you'll take good care of her." Her eyes full of tears, she then turned to get into her car with empty arms. I got into our car carrying little Bethany. I could hardly let go of her to put her in the car-seat; afraid that if I let go, she would suddenly vanish.
