It was early in the morning and there was water everywhere. Danny stood in the front hall, staring at it like an idiot, having no idea what to do next. He blinked.
He first noticed something wasn't right while trying to make breakfast. The light in the refrigerator was out, and then the toaster didn't work. It wasn't until the coffee maker didn't make his coffee that he woke up enough to realize the electricity was actually out. He left the kitchen still half asleep and shuffled barefoot down the hall to check out what was going on, only to discover that water was seeping out from under the door to the utility room. When he opened the door, out came a rush of several inches of water that soaked his feet and the tiled hallway.
Danny sighed. He went and grabbed a flashlight, and when he shined it into the utility room, everything became much clearer. There was water coming down the back wall of the room, the same wall that the electrical box was mounted on. The ceiling was soaked and starting to buckle and the floor was covered in several inches of water. From what Danny could tell, whatever had caused the flood upstairs was still running.
"Shit!" Danny cursed and closed the door, rushing out into the hallway and up the stairs. He pounded on his neighbor's door. "Hello?" he called, still pounding.
One of his pot-smoking neighbors finally came to the door.
"Hey, Dan-O."
"Leon, my condo is flooding."
"Yeah?" Leon said, scratching himself impolitely. "Bummer."
"Leon, is there water running in your place?"
"Uh. Don't know. Jeff?" Leon called down the hallway. "Yo! Jeff! Are you running the water, man?"
"Oh, shit!" Jeff's voice came down the hall, followed a moment later by Jeff himself, rushing past Leon, presumably toward the bathroom. "Oh, fuck!"
Danny shook his head. "Shut it off, Jeff!" he shouted.
"Working on it ... there. Yep! It's off now! Fuck, there's water all over the goddamn bathroom. Shit!"
Leon shrugged. "Sorry, man."
"Right." Danny shook his head again and went back downstairs.
