Introduction A new technology has emerged within the last decade that offers both new and established authors a grand opportunity to present their work, in the manner they wish, to an open audience around the world. Often confused with being a publisher, and frequently labeled as being a vanity process, this technology called "print-on-demand" is a publishing method or process of printing a book one copy at a time as they are ordered or requested by the buyers. But regardless of how it is recognized, it is here-and most likely will remain-for the business is booming and as more authors arrive ready to bring their works to the public, there seems to be no foreseeable end to the 'demand.' Most authors find this opportunity through writer's magazines, friends, peers, or just by sheer luck and are jumping into the fee-based print-on-demand market long before they even have a chance to learn at least some of the basics. And that is what this handbook was designed for: to introduce those interested in this publication method to some of the most basic terms and ideas so that they can begin to look into their options without being blinded by the potential or overwhelmed by the opportunities. This information is presented as neutrally and plainly as possible-with no direct reference to any specific company-in order to give the reader an unbiased overview of where to begin and some things to keep in mind while researching. And yes, there are other resources available which can provide an interested party a more in-depth analysis of both the system and the methods involved if they desire further information, but this book is only being offered as a starting point for beginners.
