THE KILLING FIELD
At that moment there appeared, almost noiselessly, the dark circular shape of a hoverer. Rifle fire ripped downward, tearing into the throng. Men tried to run. Slave girls screamed. Otto seized Julian and flung him to the ground. Princess Gerune huddled on the dais. Julian freed himself from Otto's grasp and, fighting his chains, struggled to the dais. He grabbed the Princess, thrusting her beneath the platform's timbers.
"Who holds the key to your chains?" Otto called.
"There!" cried Julian. "There!" He pointed to a body, one of Ortog's yeomen. Otto reached the corpse, and tore the wallet at its belt. In moments he had Julian free.
"We must flee!" said Otto.
"Not without the Princess," said Julian.
Gerune looked at him wildly.
Atop the flaming, blackened dais, King Ortog stood alone, cursing, firing his pistol into the air...
