Chapter 1
The Party
The entryway into the home of Tammy's best friend, Vanessa, shimmered in firelight. Rows of candles, bubbled and twisted, melted in iron medieval looking holders that adorned the foyer.
Tammy delighted at the surprise costume Vanessa had chosen to wear for her Halloween party--a dominatrix. Sweeping the front door open and gesturing Tammy in, Vanessa had enough black and white make-up on her face to appear skeletal. A leather bustier complimented her already bountiful chest. She squealed and hugged Tammy. "Get in here, girl. I's beginning to wonder if you were going to show."
Stepping through the threshold, Tammy said, "Well it was a tough choice between this or staying home and knitting."
Vanessa snickered. Hip hop music thumped from somewhere in the depths of the festivities. The roar of voices spilled through the hallway. Crisp autumn air sucked through the home before Vanessa closed the front door. Her knee-high boots clip-clopped on the tiles. "Let me take your coat."
Tammy shook off a chill as she placed her purse on a hall table and wrestled out of the garment. Her gaze roved Vanessa's outfit. "So, I see how you keep Enrique in line now."
"Actually, I did wear it once before we had sex. But Enrique wouldn't let me spank him with the whip." Wide-eyed, Vanessa leaned in to Tammy. "He did lick these heels, though, when I demanded it."
Tammy laughed as she slung her wrap over Vanessa's outstretched arm. Vanessa stowed the garment and purse in the hall closet.
This time, it was Vanessa's turn to behold Tammy's attire selection. "A French maid. Very nice." Vanessa tugged at the skirt. "Shows off that booty."
"Yeah, this was one of the few costumes that made my ass look slim."
Vanessa rolled her eyes. "Oh, please ... men like your package."
Tammy cocked her head, tugging her lips to one side of her face. "Not lately."
Putting her arm around Tammy's neck, Vanessa guided her into the party. "Girl, with that costume, we'll change that."
As they entered the living room, cobwebbed and flashing from a strobe light, Tammy inspected the crowd. Just as she had anticipated, not many wore sexy costumes. The common masquerade choices were ghouls, witches, and for some stupid reason, pirates. She never understood the celebration of those murderous thieves. It was like painting Nazis up as saints. But then again, she knew all too well that the general public didn't pay much attention to history.
However, dancing, or really grinding, in the midst of the crowd was a couple wearing togas. Tammy felt a rush when spotting them. If she didn't know better, she'd have thought the guy was fucking the girl in the ass. He grooved behind her, kissing her neck, and pawing her crotch. The girl, with her hands on top of his, exuded bliss.
Tammy gulped and glanced at her friend. "Thanks again for wearing something ... risqué, too." Tammy raised her voice above the increased volume and slid her arm around Vanessa's waist. "I would have felt so stupid traipsing around in this skimpy thing by myself."
"Not a problem. Fits the mission of our party. When I told Enrique we were gonna show some skin, I thought he was gonna shoot his wad right there."
A swarthy, gaunt figure with a drill lodged in his head and blood cascading down his neck and chest approached. When he hugged Tammy, she recognized him as Enrique.
She giggled. "God, that's disgusting."
"You like it?" Enrique breathed whiskey all down her chest as he unsteadily ogled her. "I broke this drill last week on the job site. So, I pried the casing off, snapped it back together and glued this band in it." He removed the get-up. It was like a set of earmuffs. One side had the hand tool stuck in place and the other had a drill bit--kind of like the fake arrow through the head that Steve Martin used to wear. Enrique used the tip of the bit and hiked her skirt up. "Maybe I'll drill in there later."
Tammy grinned and slapped his hand away. "Sorry, stud. It's not for you."
He donned the head set again. "Well ... then ... then do my wife and let me watch. Or take pictures or something."
Vanessa winked at her.
The song blasting through the crowd changed and got even louder. Tammy bracketed a hand around her mouth like a bullhorn and shouted to Enrique. "If this guy you two have been telling me about is half the hottie I think he is, then I'll let him take pictures of me."
If it even came to that. Lately, Tammy couldn't break her drought. Petite, with very smooth Irish skin, and a storm of auburn locks, she'd expected to hook up by now. Maybe she came across as too smart--not just from her glasses, but her droll sense of humor. Was it so much to ask that her dates have some intellect and dig brainy women?
The dominatrix leaned into her husband's ear. "Why don't you go get her a drink?"
"Oh, shit, yeah. What ... whatdya having?"
"How 'bout a rum and coke?"
Vanessa bellowed, "Bring me a beer, knave. And crawl back on your knees."
Enrique saluted his wife and staggered toward the kitchen.
Patting at her slicked back tresses, Vanessa said, "He sooo has the hots for you. Says you got a Tina Fey thing going on since you started wearing your glasses more."
"That's nice to hear in such a dry spell. But it doesn't change my mind about married men." Tammy shrugged her shoulders and shook her head with an icky face. "Even with you being okay with it, it's just too easy or something. Your ... whole ... recent swinging thing really blows my mind."
Vanessa dropped her arm from around Tammy's neck and grabbed her hand. "It spices up the marriage since the kids moved out. And we keep it in check. Anyway, I got a good feeling about you and Chad. I'd love to fuck him. You better tell me all the juicy details when you two hook up."
Tammy waved her hand. "He probably won't show. Too good to be true. Something'll go wrong."
"I'm telling ya, he really sounded interested."
"Is he here?"
Vanessa released Tammy's hand and pursed her lips. "Well ... not yet, but..."
"It's ten thirty. I was fashionably late. Made my grand entrance and everything. Not a good sign."
"He'll be here."
Tammy threw her head back. "Whatever. If he does, fine. I made back up plans just in case."
With a raised brow, Vanessa ventured, "Garrett?"
Just the mention of his name caused Tammy's heart to flutter. But sadly, both of them were far too professional. "No. He's still my boss and probably always will be." Tammy reflected a moment on the various injustices of life then shifted back to the here and now. She made a wincing face. "I kind of ... called one of my exes."
Vanessa's shoulders drooped. "Don't tell me. Rick?"
Tammy scowled. "Of course not. Done with him forever."
"You've got to be kidding me. Dan ... you called Dan?"
Sighing, Tammy answered, "I texted him. Told him I was coming to this."
Vanessa nodded and slowly closed her eyes. "It all makes sense, now. So you're the one who instigated him. Enrique told me he'd invited him. I couldn't figure out for the life of me why."
"He's not that bad a guy. Yeah ... he didn't pay his bills and all, but he's good to the kids and me after the divorce."
"He's soooo..." Vanessa shivered in repulsion. "I mean ... before he gained all that weight and lost his hair, he was kind of cute, but now..."
"I know, I know. But he's always been nice and every once in a while he hits on me. Remember, he's a backup."
A couple breezed by and took a gander at them. The guy wore a vampire getup. He was tall and had the bedhead/rock star look and a five o'clock shadow that drove Tammy wild. In fact, he resembled, almost to a fault, the lead singer of her favorite band. If not for the cape trailing behind him and the fangs poking out of his lips, Tammy wouldn't have known what he was supposed to be. Undoubtedly, he didn't want to disguise his good looks with makeup or a mask. His arm hung around a woman's waist. She modeled a librarian outfit from what Tammy could tell. Cat's eye glasses. High heels. Blue business suit. However, Tammy didn't pay much attention to her with the cool drink of water leading the way.
The vampire dipped his chin at them. "Ladies."
Tammy offered a polite smile and wondered what it would feel like to ride his whiskers. A glaze of sweat seeped out of her scalp.
After the couple swept by, Tammy turned to Vanessa. "Are they swingers, too?"
As if dumbfounded, Vanessa said, "They who?"
"The couple that just passed by."
"Several couples have passed by, Tammy."
"I mean the vampire."
Vanessa shook her head. "Didn't see Dracula."
"He's easily the best looking guy here. He just checked us out. You didn't see..." Tammy waved it off and changed the subject. "Am I the only single here?"
"And Chad ... when he shows up. But back to the topic. You would actually lower yourself to sleeping with Dan again?"
"After eighteen months of nada, my vibrator is begging for a hiatus. I'm certainly not getting bites from guys like the vampire there."
"Yeah, but..." Vanessa nodded toward the kitchen. "Enrique?"
"Adorable, but yours. You know my rules."
Vanessa settled her palms on her hips. "Chika, you are out of your mind. It's like trying to decide whether to boink Jabba the Hut or Denzel Washington. And talk about too easy! What's up with that?"
Tammy bowed her head, acknowledging that Vanessa had zinged her. "Well ... I think ... it's not a judgmental thing. I'm just afraid..."
Vanessa tilted her head as if to entice the revelation.
"You just don't know how much I love dick, Vanessa. Unfortunately, it's the reason I got married both times. Yeah, Dan wasn't suave or anything, but he was a good lay. Then he got me pregnant on the third time. And Rick, as much of an asshole as he turned out to be, God, he had a nice cock. So I'm kind of afraid to even think about Enrique because..."
"You might get attached?"
"Bull's-eye. And I really don't want to get attached to a married man, let alone Enrique."
"He'd be stoked to know that. Our secret, though."
Nodding emphatically, Tammy said, "God, yes."
Vanessa squinted at her and smiled mischievously. "So, what about Chad? You gonna get all wrapped up in him?"
"I'm not gonna get ahead of myself." Tammy raised her brow at Vanessa. "But he's gotta at least make an appearance first."
Enrique returned with a tray of beverages. "I bring to thee conversation lubrication." He snatched a full shot glass from the tray and shoved it at Tammy. "You must slam this. It's the admission to our party."
Tammy accepted the glass. She observed the whipped cream and dark liquid and recognized the drink. "A blowjob. How fitting. More like panty dropping potion."
He kneeled over as if worshipping her privates. "Whatever will lead the way to your treasures."
Tammy slapped his shoulder.
He straightened back up, handed a shot to Vanessa, and picked the last one for himself. "To our libidos!"
Although Tammy laughed along, she thought that was the last thing she needed to toast. She pitched her head back and swallowed in sync with her friends. The gooey sweetness coated her throat. Maybe it's a good omen, she thought.
Enrique distributed the ordered drinks and bounced back toward the kitchen.
"Oh, that husband of yours," Tammy declared.
From behind her, Tammy heard someone speak her name--a voice she knew all too well. She pivoted to greet Dan but was robbed of her breath. Two women stood to each of his sides. Gorgeous women dressed as angels and he, the devil. Tammy felt her mouth drip open.
Dan beamed and took her hand. He squeezed it and said, "How ya doin'?"
Nothing would come out of Tammy's mouth.
Her ex-husband looked ... well ... somewhat attractive. He wore a white tuxedo. Scarlet handkerchief peeking from the front pocket. A dark goatee that nicely contrasted his graying temples and slick scalp. Two black horns protruded from his upper brow--the only sign of dressing for the occasion.
The women, girls really--young enough to be his daughters, wore transparent gowns and nothing but panties underneath. Dark nipples capping full breasts loomed beneath the material. One girl was a blonde, the other a redhead. Tinsel halos crowned their heads. Little paper wings jiggled behind their backs. Slutty perfume emitted from one or both of them.
Tammy had seen Dan as little as three months before. He didn't have the facial hair then. Other than that, the formal wear, or the girls, she couldn't figure out his magnetism. Was it the trophies on each of his arms making him look desirable?
Vanessa offered her hand. "Dan, it's been a while."
He shook with her and studied the bustier. "Wow. That's quite a costume. Nice melons. Who knew?"
The angels tittered.
Tammy shot Vanessa a look as if to say: How in the hell is he with them?
As Dan turned his attention to Tammy's attire, Vanessa subtly shrugged and flashed her eyes wide open to answer the query.
"French maid," Dan continued. "That's hot."
Did she just feel herself blush? Tammy faked the best smile she could muster and asked, "Who are your friends?"
He looked to the blonde on his right. "This is, believe it or not, Angelina." Shifting his gaze to the other woman, he concluded, "This is Gabrielle." He fixed his attention back to Tammy with a shit-eating grin. "This whole thing was their idea. The devil and the angels. They chose my tux and everything. Girls, this is my ex-wife, Tammy Swift."
Tammy thought she might yack the shot up. She had to inquire. "And ... where did you crazy kids meet?"
Dan's face lit up. "Oh, I gotta tell you about this place, Tammy. All I can say is, if you're crawling to on-line dating sites, don't waste your time."
Tammy cringed. She could always count on Dan to express himself like a Cro-Magnon. And to think she was going to give him some if the Chad thing didn't work out--which it probably wouldn't. Not by the looks of things now. "I'll remember that."
Once more, Enrique joined them. "Satan, how's it hangin'?"
Dan gathered the angels in by groping their asses. They giggled like brainless twits. "This is how," Dan roared.
Enrique nodded approval. "You know, you ladies don't have to wear those pesky tops if you don't want to. No point--"
Vanessa elbowed him in the chest. "This is still a costume party."
Poor Enrique looked positively dumbfounded. He opened his mouth to Vanessa, but she shushed him.
"Think I'll run to the bathroom real quick," Tammy said.
Vanessa grabbed her hand and waved to the immediate guests. "Me, too. Talk amongst yourselves. Enjoy the party. Drink plenty of alcohol."
Thundering down the hall, Vanessa said, "They're call girls."
Tammy navigated to keep from stepping on Vanessa's heels. "No ... do you think?"
"Absolutely. How else do you explain it? No women that fine would ever go for Dan without..." She halted and shot Tammy a mortified visage. "Not that you're not a hottie..."
"Cut it out. I knew what you meant." Now, she pulled Vanessa along. "Let's face it: I don't have tits like those two."
"They're high dollar."
Tammy shook her head. "Nope. Dan is broke and always will be. Even if he won the lottery, he wouldn't pay for a hooker. Not his style. He'd jerk off to a porn or something."
"Well maybe a rich uncle died. Left him some coin."
"He would have told me. And Dan definitely would have shared it with the kids."
"He wouldn't have to. Mark is with the airlines. Jake is in college. They're taking care of themselves."
"Believe me." Tammy eased to a stop. "Dan would share the wealth. He'd probably even give some of it to me. He's that nice."
"Then you're gonna have to figure it out on your own 'cause I wouldn't do him if he had a dick like the Washington monument."
