eBook Description: From the mind that brought you the critically acclaimed short stories Dinner for the Dead and When Darkness Falls comes a tale of life after the apocalypse for three friends in a zombie inhabited world. With a style that is taking horror fans by storm, Chris Morrow once again takes a common horror theme and twists it into something new. Compelling characters and high suspense make Portland: Population 3 a must read for fans of zombie lit and horror lovers alike. A deadly disease has mutated into something worse than death, turning its victims into zombies. In the small Missouri town of Portland, Chad Mayfair and his friends Dale and Marjorie have taken refuge at the fire department. It's not a perfect life but it beats the hell out of the alternative. Then one day Marjorie gets sick. In a post-apocalyptic world where the line between life and death has been erased, decisions have to be made and all of the options suck.

The clang of the clasp striking the flagpole caught Dale's attention. The rope was wrapped so tightly around the day walker's ankle that it had sheared off the loose dying flesh and the white ankle bone was exposed. Dale picked up a rifle and drew a bead on the zombie, but Chad stopped him by gently pushing the barrel of the gun toward the fire department roof. He motioned toward Marjorie; she had drifted off to sleep.
"She was up all night. Let her rest. She needs it," Chad whispered. Dale nodded and stood the rifle up against the waist-high outer wall. The clang-clang-clang would continue until either the rope wore through or it sawed the rotting thing's ankle off.
"I think I saw Carol Ann Wilson yesterday," Dale said with a dreamy-eyed expression and a deep sigh. Then he shook his head in disgust and took the bottle out of Chad's hand.
"Wasn't looking so good I bet," Chad replied quietly so as to not wake Marjorie.
"She had the bristle end of a tooth brush sticking through the side of her face. It's almost like there's a little piece of them still in there somewhere you know; like she wanted to brush her teeth and just rammed the damn thing right through her cheek--and the wrong end too."
Dale took a big gulp of the whiskey and handed the bottle back.
"I'm glad Marjorie didn't see Carol Ann. I think they were friends," Chad said, looking over at Marjorie, hoping that one of her frequent nightmares didn't wake her. He also hoped desperately that when she awoke, the mysterious pain in her stomach would be gone.
