I hadn't planned to break out of prison that day--or any other day, month, or decade. The crazy lady changed my mind.

Four men, if you include me, were crowded into the Operations Room, gawking at a wall-sized digital membrane set to show the outdoor exercise yard. The image was clear enough for counting dust motes, but what it revealed seemed staged, unreal, an action-adventure Experience soon to be interrupted by another interminable batch of commercials. There, on the molecule-thin screen, a female prisoner was sprinting toward the chain-link perimeter fence, which was thirty feet tall and crowned with eighteen strands of barbed wire angled progressively inwards. Like any good action-adventure heroine, the woman was incredibly, implausibly quick.

Outside, yard guards and assorted prisoners were enjoying this free show, standing well beyond the line of fire and placing hasty bets, probably on how close to the fence the runaway would get before being mowed down. Female inmates were rare in Canicula Ultra-Security Penitentiary (which says flattering things about estrogen). This particular inmate looked fit enough but delicate and terribly vulnerable....
