?Christopher Fulbright will sneak up on a lot of readers. His stories are sharp and deadly, like an assassin's blade on a dark night. Keep an eye on him, or you'll be sorry."--Steven E. Wedel, author of CALL TO THE HUNT and MURDERED BY HUMAN WOLVES

He turned on the light.
Eddie stood with his back to the bathroom, as 75 watts of soft white light flooded the hall and overflowed into the living room.
Blood covered the living room floor, stained the Persian rug Francine had bought last Christmas. It pooled on top of the coffee table, was splattered in huge red spots across the white leather couch. Fear settled over him like a cold blanket with the realization that his dream had turned into a nightmare, and he couldn't wake up.
I am awake.
My god.
Death had come for a visit.
Eddie choked as he looked around the room, at the blood, at a turned-over sofa cushion and a spilled glass of soda.
He looked down at the tan carpet beneath his feet. It was wet all right. Dark purple and coagulating.
He followed the river of blood down the hallway to the bathroom. Smeared handprints streaked the walls. He could see the traces of a struggle in the reflection of the vanity mirror. A picture of a single tree in front of a snow-capped San Juan mountain range hung crooked, like a prop in a haunted house.
Eddie couldn't stop himself from pushing the door open wider and stepping in. His face loosened, his knees felt liquefied. He fell to the floor, felt cold wetness seep through the fabric of his slacks, and then he pulled himself up by the counter. His fingers came away slick with blood. There was a shallow pool of scarlet in the bottom of the basin near the drain.
The spigot dripped into the tub half-filled with what looked like plum wine. Francine lay in the bathtub. Her throat was torn open, neck slick with more blood. A split trail of it ran from a cut on her forehead. Her head was kinked to the side, and she looked at the ceiling above him with wide terrified eyes. Her throat was slashed open, her neck slick with more blood. A split trail of it ran from a cut on her forehead. The blood on her neck was dark, and fresh.
