It was two minutes to closing at JJ's Video. Tom was alone behind the counter as the woman swept in through the double doors. She aimed a rental copy of My Best Friend's Wedding toward the returns slot, but as Tom smiled and held out his hand, she gave it directly to him. She smiled back. Blond, svelte, about thirty, Tom had seen her before. A regular customer. Wife of the dentist just down the street. One lucky tooth-puller, that guy. She glided out. The dull routine resumed. Tom was already done logging in the other returns. As usual, he had been more efficient than the position demanded. He couldn't wait until June. With his college degree in hand, he could quit this part-time gig and get a position with a future. He opened the case the woman had handed him and saw that the tape was not entirely rewound. He inserted it in the VCR under the counter and took care of the oversight. While the spindles whirred, he placed the CLOSED sign in the window and locked the entrance. Popping out the cassette, he noticed it didn't match the case. It had a plain label with the title While the Cat's Away, Part III scribbled upon it. Tom's left eyebrow rose. The store possessed no video with that title. Putting the cassette back in the player, he turned on the monitor and pressed PLAY.
