The mansion dominated the top of the hill, a masterful piece of architecture that put to shame every one of the equally expensive, custom-built, perfectly-maintained homes farther down the slope. What a place to be working at, I thought. I figured it would be days, maybe weeks, before I got to meet the owners. But no sooner did I amble onto the grounds, accompanied by the caretaker I was replacing, than down the pebbled lane came two blonde visions in a pair of summer dresses. "Oh, you must be the new gardener," said one of the women. "I'm Natalie, and this is my daughter, Clarice." Mom and offspring flashed me smiles so dazzling I had to blink. Remember those dishwashing liquid commercials on TV--you know, the ones where the mother looks so young you don't know who's the parent and who's the child? If Natalie hadn't admitted their relationship, I would never have guessed. My mouth hung open, catching flies. "Pleased ... uh, pleased to meet you," I stammered. "We hope you'll enjoy your tenure with us, Mr...?" Clarice's eyebrow raised inquisitively.
