Edging toward the French doors which opened on the veranda, Albert moved to escape the cocktail party dinner, only to discover that others had the same idea. The crowd, like glutinous molasses, had simply spread outward, filling the patio and the fieldstone steps that led to the sloping terraces. For Georgetown, it was a surprisingly large garden. "Warm for November," a woman's voice said beside him. He turned, seeing her leaning against the stone balustrade, a wine glass filled with amber liquid held by its stem in her tapered fingers. In the other hand, the fingers held a glowing cigarette poised upward so that her lips had to swoop like a bird after a worm to take a drag. "Yes," he nodded. "New York is colder now." He had come down on the shuttle to attend Judy and Tracy's farewell for the Austrian ambassador. Washington's parties were a respite from the usual round of Manhattan soirees, too familiar with their roving bands of cliques and claques. Judy, on the other hand, collected pols and diplomats, a changing kaleidoscope, and being a natural voyeur he enjoyed the contrast. Besides, nowadays a banker couldn't ignore the Washington connection.
