In the darkness at the foot of Jerome's bed, two glowing eyes hovered. Yellow eyes, hungry eyes. Eyes that swayed hypnotically back and forth as they inched slowly forward. Jerome pressed back against the headboard, as if he might somehow push himself through it and the wall behind, push himself to safety. But the headboard and the wall held. No escape that way. And then the sound began. A cicada-like drone, but deeper and slower, as if someone had recorded the noise made by the summer insects and then played the tape back at a far slower speed. Or perhaps it was more like the staccato vibration of a rattle, thick and heavy, growing forth from the scaly smooth tip of a snake's tail.
