"Fourteenth in her series of Sword and Sorceress anthologies, this fine collection of twenty-seven short stories by authors familiar and unfamiliar upholds Ms. Bradley's tradition of very good tales.... With this many stories to choose from, it is difficult for me to pick out a single one that I liked the best, but if pinned down "The Blade of Unmaking" by Elisabeth Waters might be my choice."--Norm's Notes

Alyssa was enjoying a rare moment of quiet in the chapel when the housekeeper summoned her. "Lady Alyssa, there is a Royal Envoy in the Great Hall. You must go greet him at once."

"Oh, no!" Alyssa hated having to meet strangers, and being the only member of her family in residence made it worse. She would have to apologize for her parents' absence, which would doubtless displease the noble guests. But she was a dutiful girl, so she went quickly along the stone walkway to the Hall.

There were three strangers there, an elderly man and a middle-aged woman, both dressed in the dark blue robes favored by wizards, and a younger man, probably about five years Alyssa's senior, dressed in the most elaborate clothing she had ever seen. The steward stood with them, politely discussing the weather, while one page poured wine into the goblets they were holding and another page took their outdoor cloaks.

"Lady Alyssa," the steward told her, "come greet your guests, the Lord High Wizard Logas, the Lady Wizard Sarras, and Lord Robert Fitzroy." At a sign from Logas, the steward bowed and removed the pages and himself from the room.

Alyssa curtsied, wondering what would bring such a company to her parents' out-of-the-way small castle. Her family was only minor nobility, and, even though Alyssa had never paid much attention to anything outside the castle walls, she knew that the Lord High Wizard was Head of the Order of Wizards and Advisor to the King. As for Lord Robert, while she didn't remember hearing anything about him, the surname Fitzroy indicated that he was one of the King's natural children.

"I regret that my parents are not home to receive you, my Lords, my Lady," she said.

"It matters not," Logas said. "Our errand is to you."

"Me!" Alyssa exclaimed in astonishment. "Are you certain?" she added, before her brain could tell her mouth to shut. Indeed, it still hung open.
