Even the female receptionist gave Elke a second glance as she walked in, an appreciation that bordered on jealousy. Thirty-eight years of life had honed Elke's stateliness the way age improves a fine vintage. "Ms. Stanford to see Mr. Curtis," Elke said, carefully giving the woman a broad, direct smile. The receptionist, clearly pleased at the courteous tone, got on the intercom immediately. "He'll see you right away," she announced shortly, and started to rise. "I know the way," Elke said warmly. She strolled back to the investment company's suite of lavish private offices and knocked on the door labelled Marketing Manager. "Elke!" called Curtis, standing up as she walked in. "What brings you here?" "Hello, Don." Elke closed the door behind her and locked it. "Expecting anyone within the next ten minutes?" "No," he replied. "Good." She crossed the room and ran a finger down the length of his lapel. Curtis, a tall if unassuming executive in his late forties, caught the twinkle in her eyes and stroked the back of her hand.
