eBook Description: "In 1992," writes author Sean McMullen, "the artist Michael Whelan was Guest of Honour at the Australian national convention. As he was about to return home his son became sick, so I called a friend who was a doctor. He diagnosed a fungal infection of the ear, wrote a prescription and cleared him to fly. I later thought that if the fungus had been fluorescent, it might seem as if his thoughts were glowing. I began a story on the theme, but could not develop it into anything interesting. A few months later I was watching a wildlife documentary which featured a lot of quite graphic footage of animals copulating. In a flash of inspiration I changed "thoughts glowed with green fire" to "ring of green fire around his penis", and I suddenly had a story about the rise of chivalry and the dangers of loveless sexual conquest."

"As I was travelling through Westbury forest, I met with a man with a ring of green fire around his penis," Avenzoar's visitor said casually.
The poet-physician looked up at his friend and stroked his beard, then gazed wistfully across to the partially built minaret of Caliph al-Mansur's huge mosque.
