She stood alone atop the mountain, shading her eyes with her wrinkled hand, her thin gray hair stirred by the sea breeze. Far below a figure staggered up the path. A man, a young one, not an old peasant woman with a basket of oranges. From her sleeve she plucked a tiny golden bee, cradled it on her palm, and eyed it closely. Its delicate wings fluttered against her skin. She exhaled, and her breath lifted it into the honeyed evening light. It coasted away down the wind, humming contentedly. The man struggled upward. She smiled.
