A loud crash jarred her awake and she sat up, startled, the book falling noisily to the floor. Outside a storm raged. Through the window, illuminated by slashing lightning, trees flailed in the wind and thunder crashed in deafening crescendos. A small sound froze her into immobility. someone was crying.
The room plunged into darkness. She was surrounded by profound blackness. A frantic scream rose in her throat. The crying was louder. Her breath came shallow and fast. Someone was in the room. The hair on the back of her neck tingled. Gooseflesh rose on her arms. Outside the wind picked up velocity, tossing the trees violently. Air in the room moved as if whipped by a mighty stirring of wings. Curtains at the window bellied out over her arm. The other presence was so strong that she unconsciously reached out a hand to touch-to protect-but there was nothing. And just under the wind, was the sad, keening wail of someone in mortal grief.
