"I need a can of tomato paste," Frank announced as he strode from the kitchen. "I promised the guys I'd make my special barbecue sauce for the cook-off tomorrow. I have to go to the store."

Kendra, already relaxing in her nightgown and slippers, raised her eyebrows. "It's late. You'd have to travel all the way to the convenience market on Seventh."

"No choice. The stuff's got to simmer all night. See you in half an hour."

Frank nabbed his car keys and wallet and vanished. Kendra waited until she heard his footsteps rattle down the apartment house's wooden stairs before she picked up the phone.
